Cricket 1902
A pril 10, 1902. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 53 THE ENGLISH TEAM IN THE WEST INDIES. THE MATCH AGAINST GRENADA AND ST. VINCENT. (TENTH OF THE TOUR.) Played at Grenada on March 5 and 6. Englishmen won by an innings and 19 runs. The West Indians did not make the best of their opportunities after winning the toss, and only two of them, W. St. Bernard (a player after the pattern of Willie Quaife) and G. Kent, distinguished themselves. The Englishmen on the other hand did very well, partly owing to the badly arranged field of their opponents, whose bowling was good enough to have disposed of the side for a much smaller total. W. H. Mignon, who was in England with the West Indian Team of 1900, seems to have improved considerably, while R. Olliviere, a brother of the West Indian cricketer who will be qualified for Derbyshire in July, made a great impression on the Englishmen. By their small total in the first innings, the West Indians had put themselves out of the running, and although they did a little better in their second innings, they were easily beaten. ( e le v e n t h of t h e t o u r .) Played at Grenada on March 6 and 7. The Englishmen won by 65 runs. As the first match was brought to a conclusion in the middle of the second day, it was arranged to begin the return at once, and as the wicket on which the first match had been played seemed likely to last better than a new one, it was decided to continue to use it. Olliviere bowled somewhat short, and made the ball kick to such an extent that the Englishmen could do very little with him, and he took nine wickets. On the other hand the English bowlers were even more difficult, and the result was that their side had a lead of 76 on the first innings, which, as things turned out, was just as well, for they could not do much when they went in again. Never theless, they set the West Indians the task of making 186 to win, and it was generally anticipated that this would be too hard for them. When nine wickets were down for 67 the game seemed over, but Mignon and Arthur, the last man, batted so well that, to the intense delight of the native spectators, some of whom in their excitement fell back into the river which runs on one side of the ground, they raised the score to 120 before they were separated. Played at the Oval, Trinidad on March 10, 11 and 12. Englishmen won by five wickets This match was considerably inter rupted by showers which made the wicket alternately very easy and very difficult. On the whole the Englishmen had decidedly the better luck in this arrange ment, and in all probability would have been beaten but for the opportune arrival of a shower. The feature of the match was the fine batting of B. J. T. Bosanquet in both innings, and it was not a little due to his resistance to the howling that his side was victorious. Some very good cricket was shewn by Mr. Harragin, the West Indian captain, and by S. Smith and J. O. Urich. Smith, a left-hand bowler who knows how to take advantage of a queer wicket, proved exceedingly difficult in the first innings of the Englishmen. A ll T rinidad . First innings. Second innings. G. C.
