Cricket 1902

444 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. O c t . 30, 1902. disappointed me most however, was “ Dan” Comyn—as a rule one of our most reliable bats. By no means a stylish player, he has a grand solid defence, and his catting, driving and leg-hitting are alike clean and hard. As a rule he goes in first with L. If. Gwynn, andthe contrast between the two batsmen is remark able. The pair in figure as well as method, remind one decidedly of Lionel Palairet and H. T. Hewett the great Somerset first wicket partners during tho early nineties. C. B. Fry’s remark about them—“ Pure style at one end, sheer force at the other end, and a century or two on the board wiih no figures beneath” applies with almost equal truth 1o Gwynn and Comyn, who first for Dublin University, then for Phoenix C.C., and also Gentlemen of Ireland, have made several splendid stands for the first wicket. Except for his remarkable 39 against M.C.C., A. I). Comyn was unsuccessful during the tour, nor did he show his proper form over here after wards. J. M. Meldon was the man who accompanied Comyn to the wicket during the opening matches, but he was an absolute failure, and finally was dropped for the last match. A decade ago, Meldon was an in dispensable all-round member of an All Ireland team, but he has practically dropped out of cricket during the last few seasons only to re-appear at the start of this jTear and play a beautiful 81 against the picked eleven for the J\est, whicb promptly secured him his place. He was certainly a risky selection, and unfortunately was anything but a success. Five of the finally constituted eleven were Phoenix members, three Leinster, one Pem broke, one North of Ireland, while SSir T. C. 0 ‘ 13rien completed the side. The two sub stitutes were T. A. Harvey, the Dublin University captain, who batted s6 well against Cambridge, and S. C. Smith, the Leinster C.C. captain. The latter is a fine sty'ish batsman and a marvellous field at cover point. His brilliance in that position alone surely ought to have given him his place in the team before J. M. Meldon. The weather was miserable for cricket over here, but still we had a fairly busy season on the whole, and some very good sport. (To be continued). LONDON COUNTY C.C. Wallaroo C.C., played at Mary borough in January last. J. P. Mahoney scored a hundred in each innings. The match was a Maryborough District Cricket Association fixture (senior division). During the season 1901-2 Joseph Patrick Mahoney scored 1,022 runs in fourteen completed innings. Against Aldershot he scored 182, and with L. J. Cran put on 346 for Yengarie’s third wicket. He made one other score of three figures, namely 126 v. United Services. Joe Mahoney is only twenty years old, and before long will be found in the Queensland eleven. This season Queensland will play home and home matches with New South Wales, and in all probability the Australians will also pay us a visit. We may also have a visit from Yictoria and Lord Hawke’s eleven. It has been decided to arrange a match at Brisbane between Brisbane and Combined Country, which should bring forth two or three first- class men. The Queensland Cricket Associa tion commences the season with a credit balance of over £70. YENGARIE v. WALLAROO. —Played at Show Ground, Maryborough, Queensland, on January 4and 11,1S02.
