Cricket 1902
428 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. S ept . 18, 1902. Australians were not fortunate enough to win the toss. Accordingly their bowlers did not meet with their usual success, and throughout the day the batsmen had much the best of the situation. An excellent beginning was made by Abel and Hayward who put up 81 for the first wicket in less than an hour and a half, never being in difficulties with the bowling, and playing the best of cricket all the time. Another long stand was made by Tyldesley and Hayward. This produced 85 runs in about anhour and twenty minutes. Hayward was the first to go, having played one of his best innings of the season. It was not long before Tyldesley followed him after playing a beautiful innings in which there were many fine hits. Three wickets were now down for 175, and as ihe Pliyer.s were all experienced nun the outlook for the Australians "was not very promising. Iremongtr did not hurry himself when he first went in, and was twenty minutes without scoring, but Willie Quaife found Armstrong to his liking and made runs pretty quickly. When Iremonger got settled he played a brilliant game, treating all the bowlers alike, but when fiveminutes remained for play he had a go; at Armstrong and was caught. When stumps were drawn the total was 28*2 for six wickets. On the next day the Players added 74 to their overnight total, and tl en Trumper played another wonder fully good innings which lasted for two hours and ten minutes, and only just fell short of a hundred. Hill was also seen at his best, and long before the day’s play en ied it was almost certain that the match could not be played to a finish. When stumps were drawn the total was 208 for two wickets, Hill being not out 79. Yesterday Hill only added 2 runs to his score ; his innings had lasted for two hours. Afterwards Darling, Hopkins, 1 rumble and Armstrong all made runs, and the only question was whether the Players would break down in their second innings. But the wicket was still good and they played out time with perfect ease. PLA YE b s o f E n g l a n d . First innings.
