S e p t . 11, 1902. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 411 THE AUSTRALIANS. THE HASTINGS WEEK. THE SOUTH OF ENGLAND MATCH. T H IR T Y -S E V E N T H O F T H E T O U R . Played at Hastings on September 8, 9 and 10. Drawn. The team which did duty for the South of England in this match was not nearty as strong as had been intended, for at the last moment Fry and Ranjitsinhji stood out, while Lockwood was not able to play, and although it was hoped that Jessop would be well enough to bat, Dillon fielded for him on Monday. The result of these things was that Yine, Gill, Dillonand Day hadto come into the team. The Australians had the good fortune to win the toss, but Gill, who had been brought into the team at the last moment, did immense service to his side by disposing of both Trumper and Duff before they became dangerous. Then came Braund’s turn, and quickly he sent backHill, Gregory and Armstrong. But Noble playeda splendid innings, which was at first entirely defensive, although towards the end of it, when things were going better for his side he hit finely ; it was a wonderfully good exhibition of cricket. Hopkins made some hard drives in his 74, including a hit out of the ground off Braund, and was batting for an hour and ten minutes. Against the Australians’ total of 249 Bumup and Abel put up 53 with out loss in the hour before stumps were drawn, the former being not out 26 and the latter not out 22. Buinup now only wanted 21 runs to make his two thousandth run of the season, and on Tues day morning, soon after the partnership had produced a .hundred runs fromthe beginning, he had the satisfaction of accomplishing the feat, in which only two other men, Trumper and Abel, had preceded him this year. At 122 he was dismissed, after batting for two hours and ten minutes for a very fine innings of 66. Five minutes afterwards Abel was bowled by Armstrong for an almost perfect 55. Hayward now came in and began one of his very best efforts of the year. He received valuable assistance from Braund, Mason, and Day, and for once the Aus tralian bowling was made to look common place. Just after the tea interval Hayward was caught at short-leg for a splendid innings of 106, which included a six and nine four’s, and took three hours to compile. Two other wickets fell before stumps were drawn, but W. G. was unconquered with 17 to his credit. The total was 402 for seven wickets, so that the Australians were 154 runs behind. It was generally regarded by cricketers that it would be a sporting move on the part of W.G. if he were to declare on the next morning without going on with the innings, and as some rain had fallen in the night he tried the experiment, with the result that the Australians only saved themselves from defeat by the merest trifle. As a whole, the team did not show up particularly well in the crisis, but it was enough that Trumper was once more in brilliant form, and made his eleventh hundred of the tour. Trumble saved the situation when things looked terribly bad for his side, and by the steadiest of play spun out the innings for a long time. Eventually the Englishmen were left to make 95 to win, and although there was apparently no chance of knocking off the runs in time, the hitters were sent in first and nearly accomplished the impossible. It was a mag nificent attempt. A ustralians . First innings. Y. Trumper, b Gill ...........16 R. A . Duff, c Board, b Gill 20 C. Hill, b Braund.................14 M. A.
