Cricket 1902
S e p t . 4, 1902. CRICKET A. WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 391 THE SCARBOROUGH FESTIVAL. M.C.C. AND GROUND y. YORKSHIRE. D E F E A T O F Y O R K S H IR E . Played at Scarborough on August 28 and 29. M.C.O. won hy 26 runs. There did not seem much prospect at the close of the first day that Yorkshire could be beaten, for against a total of 161 by the M.C.C. they had scored luO for the loss of five wickets. They were not in such a good position at the came time as Lancashire were against the Australians, but rain came at about the same time and for the rest of the match they had to fight an uphill game. The M.C.C. made a terribly bad start, losing Findlay, Jones, Carpenter, and E. B. W ilson for 8 runs, on a wicket which was difficult by reason of heavy dew. But Braund and Storer greatly improved matters, the former playing a very tine game, and later S. M. J. Woods, Weigall, aud Leveson-Gower all made useful scores. York shire also made a bad start and Washington and Brown were bo.h dismissed at 14. Tunnicliffe and Denton then qut on 79 runs in fifty minutes, but both of them were out as well as Hirst before stumps were drawn. Ernest Smith was not out 3. On Friday Haigh hit hard, twice driving the ball out of the ground, but no one else could do anything on a soft wicket, and tfce total was the same as that of the M.C.C, In their second innings the M.C.C. found Rhodes and Haigh very difficult, but E. R. Wilson played a good innings. In the end Yorkshire had to make 101 to win. They lost three wickets for 10, and five for 37. Ernest Sm th did his best to turn the tide, but for once gojd fortune completely de3erted the Yorkshiremen. M.C.O. and G round . First innings. W . Findlay, b H ir s t........... 0 A. O.
