Thus in 29 innings ne has ten times made over 50, and twenty times over 20. MUSINGS OF A DOCTOR. [Last week Dr. W. G. Grace scored 129 for London County v. Warwickshire. The innings has been described as one of the best he has ever played.] The youngsters come, the youngsters go ; They make a thousand runs or so For half a dozen seasons ; They deal a lot in fancy strokes, They fatten on their pulls and pokes, And, if you ask their reasons Why they were leg-before or bowled, They can a wondrous tale unfold To show that they were blameless. But though they play a risky game They often get there all the same, In manner really shameless. Yet still I wonder whether they Would long have found their juggling pay With Alfred Shaw or Lohmann ; Would they have been so precious slim If they had sampled Spofforth, grim As any ancient Roman ? Well, who shall say? Enough for me That I am still high up the tree, With Billy Murdoch handy ; We’ve been companions ever since The days when India’s famous Prince First cried for sugar candy. S ir , If I may again encroach upon your space, I think I can satisfactorily meet the argument put forward by “ G.H.H.,” against my proposal concerning the declaration of innings. This gentleman bases his argument on a false assumption. He takes it for granted that any number of declarations would be allowed per innings; this is not, however, what I meant, 1 should only allow one declaration per innings. It, apparently, does not occur to “ G.H.H.” that the manoeuvres which he imagines two captains would go through, could not possibly benefit either side, while they would make a draw inevitable; for these reasons such manoeuvres would be entirely useless, and would, therefore, not be performed at all. Let us consider how my scheme would act when the wicket happened to be difficult. According to “ G.H.H.,” the captain of the batting side would declare directly the wicket was at its worst; supposing he did this, it is fairly obvious that the second captainwould follow suit after one ball had been sent down. The first captain would, if he had a grain of sense, foresee this retaliation, so that he would not declare, un less he wished to deliberately waste about half an hour, an action of which no captain in the whole country would ever be guilty. I hope I have now made it clear that the only effect of my proposal would be that captains would feel justified in declaring very much earlier than they can do now. Many drawn games would then be avoided, and there is no reason for supposing that the rule would ever be abused in the manner suggested by “ G. H.H.” I am, sir, yours, etc., August 23. W. A.
