Cricket 1902

Aug. 21, 1902. ORIOKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 365 YORKSHIRE v. SOMERSETSHIRE. Played at Taunton on August 18, 19 and 20. Drawn. Owing to continued rain it was not possible to begin this match until yesterday. Tunnicliffe opened the Yorkshire inniDgs in quite a sensational manner by hitting Braund for four 4’s in his third over. It was veiy difficult to make run9, and only Tunnicliffe and Hirst soured over 20, blthough Smith played well for 15. R' bson had vhe pleasure of disposing of the three great Yorkshire bowlers, Hirst, Baigh and Rhodes, with successive balls. Against tbe Yorkt-hire total of 129, Somerset put up 60 for the first wicket, thanks to some excellent batting by Palairet and Braund, but after this the bowlers had the upper hard, and the last nine wickets only added 41 runs. There was no probability of finishing the game, but Brown and Washington p ’ayed very good cricket in the Yorkshire second innings. Y orkshire . Owing to the rain there was no play on Monday, but the two captains, both of them anxious to finish the match if possible, agreed to begin on Tuesday at 10.30 a.m. and to play on until 6.45 p.m., and, if there was a reasonable prospect of concluding the match, to prolong play for another quarter of an hour. There was no play at Tonbridge, on Monday, owing to rain. On Tuesday morniDg Worcestershire won the toss and probably, after a very short time, wished thnt they had not done so. For they lost half their wickets for 46 runs, and at luncheon eight men were out f. r 64 runs, play having begun at twelve o’ clock. Afterwards Wilson scored 30, all off Blythe, in a quarter of an hour, so that the total came within two of a hundred after all. Kent lost Dillon for a duck’s egg, and th<n Burnup and Day played such excellent cricket that tbey were not parted until the score was 123, when Day was out for a tine innings i f 64. Burnup made his hundred t efore he was dismissed, having batted in great form for two hours and three- quarters. When stumps were drawn Kent were 1C8 runs on with five wickets in hand. The game was resumed yesterday just before twelve o’clock, and when 57 more runs had been made the innings was closed at half-past twelve. Four Worcestershire men were out for 76, and ihen H. K . Foster and Wheldon made a fine stand. But after this nothing was done, and Kent had the easiest of victories. Foster made a splendid effort to save the game. W o r c ester sh ir e . First innings. Abel and Hayward made a fine commencement of the innings by scoring 98 in an hour and twenty-five minutes for the first wicket, Hayward making two thirds of tbe runs. Hayes stayed for some time with Abel, and played a very useful innings. Four other men did very little, but when stumps were drawn with the total at 208 for six wickets, Abel was still unconquered with 87 to his credit. It was found impossiole to continue the game either on Tuesday or yesterday. S u r r e y . More fortunate than all the other teams which were playing on Monday, 8urrey and Derbyshire had a littie more than three hours play. Surrey seemed to have a considerable advantage in winning the toss, for the wicket was very soft and the ball cutthrough, while it teemed almost certain that it would get in a bad Bestwick bowled two no-balls.
