It was unfortunate for the comm ittees of both sides in this m atch that the weather was m ost unsati?- factory on M onday, fo r the gates o f the out and hom e m atches between the tw o counties are pooled. Bain interfered with play very considerably, w ith the result that the day’s cricket produced 150 runs, for w hich W orcestershire lost six wickets. Arnold was not out 61—a very good innings. G ood progress was m ade with the m atch on T u ‘ sday. The W arw ick shire m en scored slowly, thus follow ing the exam ple o f their opponents, and did not do very well, although W . G . Q uaife kept up his w icket steadily. Thanks in a great measure to his persistency, W arwickshire ended their first innings nearly level. Worcesterahire had a few m om ents batting, and scored 5 runs for one w icket before stumps were drawn. There was n o play yesterday. W orcestershire . O nce m ore the D erbyshire m en by their batting in their first innings show ed how greatly the team has im proved this season. On the first day’s play they had a little the best o f the gam e, for they had disp ose! of »three good batsm en for 107 against their ow n score of 373. The great innings o f the day was played b y A . E . Law ton, w ho put a vast am ount of pow er into his strokes, his drives being w ell placed and his pulls m ost effective. H e was on ly batting for an hour and a half for his fine innings o f 146, w hich included a six and tw enty- four 4’s. Ollivierre also played a pow erful game, and indeed nearly all the m em bers of the team show ed very attractive cricket. For H am pshire E . M . Sprot took a leaf out of the book of the other side and scored 53 in three-quarters of an hour, w hile Stone, w ho w ent in first, carried his bat for 26. T here was m ore hard and effective hitting on Tuesday, Llew ellyn especially being in great form . H e m ade tw o sixes off successive balls by H ulm e, w hich brought his score to a hundred, and in partnership w ith Johnston he helped to put on 109 runs in an hour and ten m inutes. His own score of 109 was put together in an hour and fifty minutes. B ow ell and B odington m ade useful scores, and as a result H am pshire were only a few runs behind. D erbyshire did not begin very w ell in their second innings, but later th ey im proved and E. M . Ashcroft played a great gam e. There was a prospect o f an interesting finish, but ow ing to rain n o play was possible yesterday. D erbyshire . First innings. L . G. W right, c Johnston, b Llew ellyn ..................... 3 C. Although it is claimed that people cannot be induced to attend m atches unless they are in the County Cham pionship, or unless the Australians are playing, there was a big crow d at Leicester on M onday . Tbe wicket was soft and run getting som ewhat difficult, but 'V. L . M urdoch, L . O. S. Poidevin and J. Gilman played very well indeed for L ondon County, while for Leicestershire, w ho when stum ps were drawn had lost three w ickets for 119, K night was in fine form , and was not out 44. D r. M acdonald was not out 21. These tw o men played first-class cricket on Tuesday and their com plete partnership accounted for 14i runs in an hcur and a quarter. M acdonald was then out for an excellent 59. K night continued to bat splendidly and found a m ost useful partner in Cos, w ho helped him to put on 179 runs for the seventh w icket in two hours and fifty m inutes. When Uoe was out K night continued to play brilliant cricket, and when the day’s play ended he had brought his score to 190 not out. B ut he had no opportunity of bringing it up to 200, fo r at one o’clock yesterday the m atch was abandoned. W . G . Grace, b Coe ... 18 W . L . M urdoch, b E m m e t t .....................44 N .
