Cricket 1902

32 4 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A ug . 7, 1902. teams in England are very interesting. The first recorded individual hundred hit in America was James Turner’s 120 for Union v. St. George, at Philadelphia, in theautumn of 1844. At that time there was keen rivalry between the two clubs, the former being the crack combination of Philadelphia and the latter of New York. The St. George’s C.C. was even then a club of several year’s standing, whilst the Union C.C. had only been formed about two years before. The latter was evidently an ambitious club, for when about four months old it challenged the St. George’s C.C., barring three of its members. The match was played at New York, and thehome team won by 151 runs, In 1844 the Union, being strengthened, challenged the best eleven of St. George’s, which resulted in two matches being played, of which each side won one. These games aroused such an amount of enthusiasm that space may be granted for brief particulars of them. (1) At New York, in September, 1844 :— U nion C.O. 37 and 80. St. George’s 169. St. George’s won by an innings and 52 runs. (2) At New York, in September, 1844 :— Union C.C. 228. Bt. G eoige’s £8. St. George’s gave in. Jas Turner made 120, having in his previous match scored 66 v. Brooklyn. In a letter, which is before me as I write, from J. M. Sanderson, the secre tary of the Union C.C., dated October 7, 1844, the following remarks occur:—“ The interest in the noble game has increased amazingly, and we are talking of organising a club composed entirely of our college boys ; if so, in a few years look out for a challenge from the Gentlemen of America to the Gentlemen of England, for a home and home match. You may laugh at this, but at the same time I assure you it will be done.” There were evidently enthusiastic cricketers in America long before the years of JS'ewhall and Patterson.
