318 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u ly 31 , 19 02. SUSSEX v. MIDDLESEX. Played at Eastbourne on July 28, 29 and 30. Drawn. M iddlesex had som ewhat the best o f the first day’s cricket. 1hanks to a fine innings o f 73 by W arner, another by Robertson of 51, som e hard hitting by T rott, and som e useful bow ling by Raw lin and J. T . Hearne. One o f the m ost noticeable features of the cricket was tbe success o f R anjifcinhji w i'h the ball, and but fo r him M iddlesex w ould perhaps have m ade a far larger score. Fry was not fortunate when Sussex went in to bat. but when stum ps were drawn w ith the total at 65 for three w ickets V ine was not out 29 and Ranjitsinhji not out 13. A great deal depended on whether R anjitsinhji c.ime off on the next m orning, but he meets w ith no luck just at present, and after adding 16 he was caught on the boundary, or, rather, according" to the loudly exp essed opinion of spectators w ho were close to where the ball fell, just, over the boundary. Vine was in excellent form , and Butt and Smith m ade useful scores, but the total fell short of that of M iddlesex by 29. In the Middlesex second innings W arner and N icholls m ade a splendid start, putting up 103 for the first wicket, in an hour and five m inutes. W ith Beldam as a partner, for fifty m inutes, and Ahsan- ul-H ak, fo r half-an-hour, W arner m ade runs quickly. Eventually he was out for a splendid innincs o f 139, m ade in three hours and a-half. W hen stum ps were drawn M iddlesex bad a lead o f 336. Yesterday the innings closed for 4 0 ', and Sussex had to m ake 438 in four hours and a-half. This was o f course out o f the question, >ut Fry and Vine m adea fine startand then the form er and K illick played out tim e. F ry was in splendid form . M iddlesex . First innings. P . F. The Brixton W anderers Cricket W eek, although favoured w ith the finest weather, was not quite the custom ary success; as whilst every gam e was enjoy able the hom e side were uuable to score a single victory, and unfortunately sustained three defeats. On Tuesday F. Odell’s 110 was a very fine innings, and E . C. Brym er’s 72 an excellently well played effort. F or their opponents H . E . K night played a magnificent not out innings o f 102. On W ednesday against L ovell’s X I . the Brixton W anderers were easily defeated, principally through a splendid inn ings o f exactly 100 by Stanley Briggs. On Friday Surrey Club and Ground brought down a strong X L and m ade a huge score. But Faulkner played a wonderful gam e for Brixton W anderers and m ade only four short o f 200. This was certainly the finest display he or any other Brixton W anderer has ever given, and he was loudly and m ost deservedly applauded on returning to the Pavilion. On W ed nesday evening an Alfresco Entertninm ent was held and the grounds illum inated, the weather being perfect and the perform ances bright, the success was, if possible, even greater than those annually enjoy able functions always are at this East D ulw ich Cricket Ground. 1st M a tch v.
