Cricket 1902
306 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u ly 31 , 1902. although the example of Dr. Grace, George Giffen, Mr. A. G. Steel, and many others would seem to prove pretty conclusivelythat batting and bowling may walk hand in hand without falling out. However this may be, Hayward was once, and still is, a really fine bowler, with a lot of command over the ball, and an excellent length. The same coolness and even temper which are so valuable to him as a batsman help him greatly as a bowler, for he is not discouraged by adverse fortune or by trifling annoyances which upset so many men who would otherwise be much more effective than they are. As a fieldsman Hayward can stand anywhere. He is a safe catch, picks up the ball neatly, and returns it quickly v ithout effort. He is one of the few Englishmen who have not lost some of their reputation when playing cricket in Australia, where the light is so trying to most of our men. W . A. B e t t e s w o r t h .
