J u l y 24 , 1902. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD O f THE GAME. M J * 1 an hour to com pile, but when he was joined by H irst he scored quickly. Although the Gloucestershire bowlers did not know how to m ake use o f the wicket, the same thing could not be said o f Rhodes and H aigh, w ho were irresistible. The Gloucestershire innings only lasted for an hour and five m inutes. In the follow -on, twenty m inutes before the day’s play ended, Gloucestershire lost a w icket for four runs. There was no play on Tuesday ow ing to rain. Yester day W rathall and Board did their utm ost to put a better appearance on the gam e, but received little support, and Gloucestershire were severely beaten. Y orkshire . Played at the Crystal Palace on July 21, 22, and 23. Derbyshire won by 99 runs. Bad as was the weather at the Oval on M onday, it was even wor<?e at the Palace, for in addition to the cold there was a shockiogly bad light, which twice interrupted play, while towards the end o f the day it was alm ost too dark for cricket. A s there had been a good deal o f rain W .G . decided to put the D erby shire m en in first, perhaps thinking that as he had only tw o bowlers at his disposal besides him self he m ight not have another chance to get Derbyshire out. A ccordingly he put hi* tw o tow lers on and left them to do the re«t. It is not a little surprising that they m anaged to get Derbyshire out before play ended, for the w icket although slow did not turn out to be very difficult. B ut the Derbyshire m en harcly rose to the occasion. I f they had succeeded in knocking off the two Palace bowlers they w ould probably have teen able to m ake a much bigger score, but as a rule the batsmen were content to play a steady gam e, and to let the runs take care of themselves. It was not by any means an exciting day’s cricket, for only 228 runs were m ade in about five hours. On the w hole the visitors had m uch the best of the deal when slum ps were drawn, for they had got rid o f Braund and W . Smith for 31 runs, while their own total was 197. W . G. was not out 15, and L. O. S. Poidevin not out 5. On Tuesday m orning the score had been increased by 15, w ithout further loss, when rain cam e down, and although an attem pt was m ade tw o or three tim es to go on w ith the m atch, no real progress was m ade until just before five o’clock. Then JBestwick did som e uncomm only good bow ling, and the w hole side were out before the tim e fo r drawing stumps. Yesterday, Derbyshire, with a useful lead, found some difficulty in scoring, but they were able to set L ondon County the task of m aking 249 to win, a task which proved quite beyond their powers on a w icket which just suited the bowlers. Played at Aigbuth on July 21, 22 and 23. Drawn. It was as cold on M onday at Liverpool as it was in the south, lu t on the other hand the w icket was fast. There was an interesting day’s cricket, Lancashire bad som ewhat the best o f the gam e, scoring 262 runs against 77 for three wickets. Tyldesley and M ac laren were again the m ainstay o f their side, but despite som e very good cricket by them things did not go well w i h L incish ire until Sharp and S il.ock came together, and knocked up 85 runs in forty minutes. W hen M iddlesex went in A hsan-ul-H ak played good cricket, but Beldam was run out when he seemed likely to play out tim °. O n Tuesday rain greatly interfered w ith the play, and only 103 m ore runs were m ade. B y far the m ost interesting innings of the day was that o f Trott, w ho hit finely in m aking his 63 n ot out. W hen p'.ay ended M iddlesex had scored 180 for 7 wickets. Yesterday no play was possible until half-past tw o. The M iddlesex innings was soon over, Trott being out without increasing his score. Lancashire began splendidly in their second innings with Garnett and Potter, but there was obviously no time to finish the m atch. L anca & hibe . First inning j. H.G .Garnett.cand b Hearne 0 G.
