Cricket 1902

290 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u l y 24 , 1902. of batting averages published in the daily newspapers on Monday last, you will find it placed well up in the bowling averages, with 48 wickets at about fifteen runs apiece. Noble and Jones alone of the Australians have taken more wickets, although it will probably not be long before Trumble comes in front of him. The first time I saw Howell bowling was at the practice nets just before the Essex match, at Leyton, in 1899. Howell was not chosen to play in the match, and was having a little practice after nearly all the other members of the team had gone into the pavilion. Not knowing who the various bowlers were (for they were of all sorts), I made enquiries of one of the onlookers, who, pointing to Howell, said that he was one of the ordinary ground bowlers, and a rotten one at that. I paid no further attention to him at the moment, but began to watch Kelly, who was batting. Presently I noticed that every now and then Kelly gave a short laugh, and was completely beaten, so that I wondered who the bowler was who was tucking him up. It turned out to be my friend “ the rotten ground bowler,” but in a very few minutes I was convinced that if Essex had such a bowler he would be in the pavilion ready to take his place in the field, and then I discovered that the so-called ground bowler was Howell.
