Cricket: A WEEKLY RECORD OT THB GAME. 168, UPPER THAMES STREET, L0 ID 0 I, E.C. THURSDAY, JULY 17th, 1902. ^ a t u i t o n # o a s i t p . The abstract and brief chronicle of the time.— Hamlet. T hebe was a remarkable similarity in the latter part of the two inniDgj played by Eton against Harrow at Lords. In each innings the last six batsmen scored only 33 runs between them, and in each innings the bowler who was chiefly responsible for the breakdown in the batting secured four wickets for ten runs, viz., Phelips in the first innings and Carlisle in the second. I t is always pleasant to see the great men of a past day keeping up their cricket in these modem times. For some time the name of W. W. Read, the famous old Surrey batsman, has prac tically been absent from the list of men who have made good scores, but on Saturday last at Streatham, for H. D. G. Leveson-Go wer’steam against Streatham, he scored 86 not out, going in at a time when six wickets were down for 81, and putting on 177 runs in an unfinished partnership with J. F. W. Crawford, saved the game for his side. A f o r t n ig h t ago it was pointed out in “ Gossip ” that Leicestershire stood in the proud position of leading county in the championship table with a glorious 100 per cent. Such are the inconsistencies of this table that a few days later, after playing one more match, Leicestershire descended with a run to tenth place, with no percentage at all. Now that another match has been played the county has dropped to last but two in the list with a percentage of minus 38'33, whatever that may mean. I t is to be feared that time is bringing about its changes in the case of the Yorkshire team which has recently lost matches against the Australians and Somerset, besides making a very poor draw against Sussex on Saturday. Of course the team may pull itself together, but it has not been covering itself with much glory lately. But whether the county succeeds in retaining its position as champion or not, it is most unlikely that it will descend very low in the table for many years to come.
