J u l y 1 0 , 1902. CRICKET 1 WEEKLY RECORD OS' THE GAME. 263 NOTES FROM SCOTLAND. (B y O ur S phcial C orrespondent .) S i irlingshire and Fifeshire mt t for the first time in the C-unty Championship at Stirling on the 3rd. Fifesbire batted first, and run-* from the outset came freely as, with the ground wet aLd slippery with the recent rain, bowling and fielding were rendered difficult. Neither county was stroDgly represented, the home shire in particular having several of their best players away. Fifeshire at last came out of its shell, and g*ve a fine exhibition of batting. The first wicket did not fall till 139, Mitchell (G.) being beaten with 88 to his credit. rlh e score was taken to 196 when the second fell. J Forbes, the outgoing batsman, being 40. J. 8. Pring’e—a Cantab—gave a fine display of batti g ; he went in first, and was not dismissed until th^ telegraph showed 233 for s*x, his share being 63. Fifeshire declared with their total at 258 for seven. When Stirlingshire went in, luck was against them, for, in addition to having the worst of the wick t, they had to contend against a bad light, btirlingshire never looked like winning, and were at one time within measurable distant e of defeat. J. H . Orr with 64 gave a splendid exhibition of sound cricket for a couple of hours, and was ably seconded by P. R. Lowe, who had 26 not out got by dashing cricket. When the game ended, Stirlingshire had compiled 154 for five, being 104 behind with five men to go in. * The success which is attending the County Cham pionship is m*'st gratifying. One of the two great matches of the series, that between Forfarshire and Perthshire, was played at Broughty Ferry on the 5th, and was witnessed by a crowd of over 15,00J spec tators. Perthshire h id the first of a very good wicket. Joe Anders n, the hero of the Scots-Auetra- lian match, played an admirable innings of 79, his timing and placing being well-nigh perfect. He got able assistance from Douglas Smith, the Worcester shire man coming next with 36. Perthshire made 197, and their innings would have realized more had it not been for the fine bowling of Forfarshire backed up, as it was, by very smart fielding. Only four wickets were down for 166, but thereafter Chambers (G. H .) Irought about a collapse. The left-hander bowled with admirable judgm ent, and had five for 48. Forfarshire required 19s runs to win, and had only two hours and a half to get them in. W . JR. Sharp (37) and A . (.’• Millar (31) forced the game nicely, and laid (he foundation of a good score. W ithin fifteen minutes of time 30 were still required, and the excitement ran high, the batsmen, Douglas Ferrier and J. Jolly, often indulging in tip-and-run. Off the third last ball of the nutch, D. Ferrier made the winning hit, and Forfarshire emerged victorious by six wickets and 8 runs, the home county having totalled 205 for four. The enthu siasm disp ayed at the close was remarkable, D. Ferrier, who had made a splendid 79 not out, being carried shoulder high to the pavilion, ami cheering which continued for fully a quarter of an hour on end. Forfarshire and Aberdeenshire are now the only undefeated teams in the county championship, but Perthshire who are a very strong combination, are by no means out of the running. The Grange have at last had to acknowledge defeat, and in a quarter where they did not expect it. The premier club had two elevens doing duty on Saturday, the stronger one going to Galashiels, where they were soundly beaten by the Gala C.C. The home team compiled the good score of 196. J. M. Brown. (61) and T. iaoggarth (45) i eing the princip *1 scorers. Tne Grange then went in, and were all oismissed for 118, the only players to make anything of the Gala bowling being JR. H. Johnston and A . G. G. Asher, who had 29 and 27 respective y. In the other match, Brechin—a Forfarshire c ub—might al*o have beaten the Grange had time permitted. The M.C.C. of Scotland made 225 for seven, and then put Brechin in. The latter made a very fine show, and when the game terminated they had totalled 118 for only two wickets, V*. Campbell, with a very good innings of 8 >not out, being top scorer. Uddington and Selkirk are, I may add, the only Scottish ciubs which have yet to record their first defeats. The *•centurion* *’ during June were as follows :— A. W. Dun«an (Grange) 145; R. L. D. Kidston (Loretto) 141 ; G. L. D. Hole (Edin. Academicals) 135; G. W . Jupp (Carlton) 132 n otou t; T.
