Cricket 1902

260 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J uly 10, 1902. Of the 48 balls he received, Jessop scored off 24. His doings in the two test matches in which he has played may be summed up as follows:— Balls Balls Buns Ground.received, scored from. obtd. Edgbaston ............... 5 ... 3 ... 6 Sheffield» 8 - 6 - 12 (2nd inns.,.. 48 Total 24 55 61 ... 33 ... 73 This must be considered a wonderful feat for such important cricket. The ’ Varsity match, although full of inter est throughout, does not call for lengthy comment. Both teamswere somewhat below the average, despite the fact that each side contained some notable names. The bowling proved to be the weak point. In Dowson and E. R. Wilson (who between them ob tained eighteen of the twenty wickets) Cam bridge possessed the best pair, but Oxford had the greater variety. Dillon and Findlay proved a capital couple to open the Dark Blue innings, but their efforts were poorly supported. To this fact their failure may be attributed. It was generally anticipated that Cambridge would win, for they were beyond doubt the stronger side. S. H. Day’s long innings was the chief feature of the game, and but for it the result of the match might well have been different. Findlay’s wicket- keeping was up to his highest standard, and greater praise than this it is impossible to give. Few more enjoyable matches than the one between the Gentlemen and Players, which concluded yesterday at Lord’s have been witnessed in London this year. From start to finish it was full of incident, the play on the second day beiDg possibly the most interesting. •verything in the game was dwarfed by the all-round cricket of Lock wood and Braund, both of whom for years to come will be able to look back at the match with the greatest satisfaction. From a spec tacular point of view the display of the Surrey man was the better of the two. His batting on the whole was vigorous and free, whilst that of Braund was at times very laboured. Both, however, showed cricket of a very high order and thoroughly deserved their success. A word of praise is due to Denton for his long innings, as he made his runs at a time when half of the Players’ wickets had fallen for a moderate total.
