Cricket 1902

J u l y 3, 1902. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 253 Sewell and Fane, after Carpenter had been dismissed for 16, played beautiful cricket, the former making the highest innings of his first-class career. It was a pity that he just missed his hundred, but now that he has got really going he will probably give a fine account of himself. S ussex . C. B. Played at Bristol on June 30, July 1 and 2. Kent won by 93 runs. Neither side showed to great advantage on the first day of this match, but Bumup and Day made a fine stand for Kent and Brownlee played a first-class innings of 66 not out for Gloucestershire, who at the end of the day had scored 116 for half their wickets against 201 by Kent. Brownlee increased his score on Tuesday to 103, his first hundred in county cricket. Bis batting was quite the chief feature of the game, and he is likely to be an extremely useful man to Gloucestershire. Nobody else did much except W . S. A. Brown, but Gloucestershire ended their innings with a lead of 12. When Kent h*d scored 46 for the loss of two wickets rain fell heavily, and cricket was abandoned for the day. Yesterday Alec Hearne played a sourd game, and most of the team m a' e useful scores, so that Gloucestershire had to make 214 to win. Wrathall played well, but things did not go well with the team ab a whole. After his fine innings Brownlee received a telegram ashing him to be at Lord’s to-day before the ’Varsity match. K ent . Dixon was the out standing feature of the first day’s play in this match. Lancashire, when stumps were drawn, had made 79 for the loss of two men, includiog Tyldesley and Ward, against the Notts total of 248. A fine innings by Maclaren, and another by Steel brought Lancashire to a good position, but when the total was 233 for five wickets, rain fell heavily. Maclaren was then not out 68, and Steel not out 38. '1here was no more play on Tuesday. Yesterday Maclaren increased his score by more than a hundred, batting in perfect style. Steel also did well, and the partnership between these two men produced 18) in about a couple of hours. After this the rest of the teim got out quickly. Notts were 143 behind, and begun well with Iremonger and Jones, who put up 44 for the first wicket. But after this not much was done except by A. O. Jones, who was in fine form. N otts .
