Downpours of rain—the pitch nought but a puddle, Showers descending on pavilion roofs ; Inside, the dripping “ sons of cricket’* huddle (All that have not gone forth in water proofs). Grim, empty benches, grand - stand too deserted— Cascades and rivers on the asphalte track— Miniature avalanche, from pipe outspurted, Shedding its water on the passer’s back. No longer now we send the leather flying By huge on drive, or mighty smash to leg; We sit before the fire while clothes are drying. And hang our pads and gloves upon the peg. No longer now we bowl for hours together, Or against lightning trundlers hold the crease, To-day we shiver, as we wonder whether The rain andmudand slush will ever cease. Jupiter Pluvius, tell us now the reason Why play is stopped by such persistent “ wet 99 ?— Why it deprives us of our cricket season, Just when we feel that we are “ getting set” ! Our county’s record but a row of dashes, Telling of games abandoned, (same old tune), We do our best to play “ between the splashes,” And sadly to remember “ This is June.” Jiine, 1902. S.E.B.
