Cricket 1902
J uhe 19, 1902. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 213 LANCASHIRE v. SOMERSET. AN EXCITING FINISH. Played at Old Trafford on June 12, 13and 14# Somerset won by nine runs. The absence of their two best batsmen, Maclareu and Tyldesley, who were plajing at Lord’s, meant a very great deal to Lancashire; on the other hand, Somerset, for the same reason, lest the services of Braund. There was no play on the first day, but on Friday an interesting day’s cricket was seen. From first to last the bowlers had the upper hand, Steel and W ebb for Lancashire, and Cranfield and Robson for Somerset, all doing very well indeed. The bats men were placed at a great disadvantage, tut Robson, S. M. J. Woods, F. M. Lee, A. B. Newton, and I ’Anson all more or less distinguished themselves. Newton and Cranfle.'d made a most ustful btand for the last wicket in the first innings of Somerset, putting on 49 runs in half an hour by vigorous hitting, and preventirg the total of their side from being insigni ficant. A t the end of the day’ s play, Somerset, with four wickets ,in hand in their second innings, were leading by 100 runs. These last four wickets pro duced 38 runs, so that Lancashire had to make 139 to win, a very difficult task indeed with a greatly weakened team. As there was no play ULtil ten minutes to three Lancashire did not go in until four o’clock, so that it was by no meins certain that, on a difficult wicket, they would be able to make the runs in the time. As it turned out, the match was exciting in every way, for Lancashire got within possible dis tance of making the runs, bnt it then became a question whether they could last long enough to accomplish their object. Cranfield was bow lirg splendidly, but several men, notably Ward, Eccles, Cuttell and Steel made very useful scores, the two latter at a very critical time, nearly winning the mntch for their side by putting on 64 runs in partner ship in lees than three quarters of an hour. But despite their efforts, at ten minutes past six the innings came to an end, and Somerset won by nine runs. S omerset . First innings. S. M. J. There was no p’ay on Saturday. K ent . H A M P S H IR E v. L E IC E S T E R S H IR E . P lay ed at S outham pton on Jun e 12,13 and 14. D raw n. It was not possible to play cricket on the first two days of this match, but on Saturday a commencement was made at twelve o’clock. Although Leicester shire could do very little against the fine bowling of Llewellyn, it was pretty evident by the time that their innirgs was over that the match would not be finished in the day. Cf the 72 runs S2 were scored for the first wicket by C. E. de Trafford and C. J. B. W ood. Hampshire in their turn could not do much against the bowling of Odell and King, but A. J. L. Hill batted very well, and the ninth wicket men made a useful stand. When the innings was over it was a quarter past five, and Leicestershire easily played out time. L eicestershire . First innings.
