Cricket 1902

19 4 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J un k 12, 1902. letting himself go, when he is apparently on the point of being bowled once or twice in an over, and on such occasions his style strikes one as awkward and un interesting. But it is just on such a day as this that he is as likely as not to get over this stage of bis innings, and to play afterwards a great game. When he is satisfied with himself, and gets comfort ably settled, he is one of the most dangerous batsmen in the world, for he can, and does, hit with great power, and is not very particular in what direction the ball goes. He is not a graceful bats man, and not altogether orthodox, but when one watches him, one thinks of the Australian batsmen of the earlier teams, who, though they might not do the ideal thing with a ball, hada habit of “ getting there,” in a way which was as mys terious to a bowler as to an onlooker. When he is at all well set, he inspires such confidence that everybody is quite taken by surprise when he gets out, whereas there are many much greater batsmen who never seem to have taken root, even after they have made a heap of runs. Hirst was born on September 7th, 1871, at Kirkheaton, which is on a hill opposite to the famous La^celles Hall cricket ground, where so many great Yorkshire cricketers ’ earned the game. In his early years he was a bowler pure and simple, but when he appeared in a first-class match for Yorkshire, against the M.C.C. at Lord’s in 1892, he was known as a very useful all-round man. In his first year he took 69 wickets for 16 runs apitca, but being stale before the end of the season, he was left out of the team. Gradually he worked his way to the front, unt 1 in 1896 he had the honour of scoriug over a thousand runs and taking over a hundred wickets in first-class c icket. In 1900 he was useful chitfly as a batsman, and was only regarded in the Yorkshire team as a change bowler. In his only visit to Australia, wiih Mr. Stoddart’s team in 1897-98, he was not much of a success, aud he seemed to loBe his form when he returned to England, but in 1899 he scored 1546 ruDS with an average of 37, and iu the same year was chosen to play for England against the Australians in the first test match. Last year he sud denly came to the front again as a great bowler, and so far this year has more than kept up the wonderful form that he then showed, while he has lost none of his powers of hitting and pulling.
