J an . 30, 1902. CRICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 13 CRICKET IN NATAL. DURBAN v. MARITZRURG. Maritsburg won the inter-county match played at the Oval, Maritzburg, on November 11. Their victory was in a great measure due to the effective bowling of M. Hime, who took seven wickets in the first innings of Durban for 51 runs, and the useful first innings of G. White. The following circular was sent by the M.C.C. to the different counties and the Press in December, but owing to the alteration in the date on which Cricket appeared, it could not appear in the December number issue:— Lord’s Cricket Ground, St. John’ s Wood, N.W., December, 1901. D eae S ir ,— I am directed to inform you that the captains of the First-class Counties met on September 24th, 1901, and agreed to refer such resolutions and recommendations as were passed then, or may he passed at future meetings, to the M.C.C. Committee for confirmation. In pursuance of this agreement, the follow ing proposals have heen approved : * (a) “ That the howling-crease shall he widened 1 ft. each way.” (/>) “ That it is undesirable, in the interests of cricket, that the ; wickets should be prepared artificially ‘ (i.e., in any way other than by water and the roller, except when patching is neces- * (a) In accordance with the rules of the M.C.C., this proposal will be brought before a special general meeting on May 7th, 1902. ILLEGAL BOWLING. The M.C.C. Committee have given'further careful consideration to the question o'f illegal bowling, and ar$ of opinion that the decision of the captains in 1900 has done so much good m discouraging this practice that it is unnecessary to suggest any drastic measure present. They hope that the County Cricket Execu tives will in future decline to play bowlers with doubtful deliveries, and thus remove the probability of any further infringement of Law 48. Should an occasion arise when an umpire by no-balling a bowler makes it clear that he is protesting against his deliveries, they think the only course open to the captain is to take such bowler off; otherwise the proper spirit of the game cannot be preserved To meet the contingency of any flagrant case of illegal bowling arising in the future, the following proposal has been made, and the Counties are invited to express an opinion thereon : “ The Counties shall authorise their captains to deal with the question, and if at any meeting convened, with notice that it will be brought up, the captains shall decide by a majority of 2 to 1 that any bowler has been guilty of illegal bowling, they shall ‘ name ’ him and recommend his suspension for at least a season, and refer it to the M.C.C. Com mittee for confirmation.” Yours faithfully, F. E. L acey (Secretary M.C.C.) The Counties have we learn practically all approved of the action of M.C*C. with regard to illegal bowling. CAPE TOWN v. WESTERN PROVINCE. After a good game, the match between the two chief clubs of Cape Town begun on November 23 was finished on Decem ber 2, ending in a victory for Cape Town by 90 runs. Excepting A. Bisset, who was useful with ball as well as bat, and Rowe, none of the members of the South African team of 1901 did much. Rowe has rarely bowled better. Altogether he took thirteen of the Province wickets for 116 runs. C aps T own . F. Hearne, b D ifford ......... 53 c J. B. Cormack, c Rowe, b Difford....................................16 J.
