Cricket 1902
JUN* 5, 1902. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 181 by very good play. On the M.C.C. side, Carpenter, King and Board did well in the first innings. When the M.C.C. went in for the fourth innings of the match to score 84, it was not very long odds that they would be beaten, for the wicket had become very difficult. W hen they had lost four men for 21 runs, they seemed out of the running, but King played a fine game, and Trott and Board made a few runs. Still when Mead, the last man, went to the wickets, two runs were required. Mead promptly hit a four and the match was over. J. T. Hearne bowled finely in each innings, and Blythe did very well indeed for Kent. K ent . First innings. Hearne (A .), lbw, b Trott... 18 Seymour, c and b Trott ... 7 M . Bonham-Carter, b Trott 16 C. Sussex won by ten wickets. Although the Sussex men were on paper tremen dously handicapped by the absence Of Fry and Ranjitsinbji, who were playing at Edgbaston, they gave a splendid account of themselves. In the place of the two absent and famous players, the team in cluded George Brann and W . Newham, and it is hardly too much to say that on this season’ s form they more than compensated for the loss of the greater men. The two old schoolfellows were together for an hour and twenty minutes, during which they scored 102 runs quite in the style to whuh spectators were accustomed some years ago. But the big inniDgs was by Killick, who, after three wickets had fallen to Simpson-Hayward’s lobs for 37, played splendid cricket in partnership with Marlow, the partnership producing 131 in an hour and forty minutes. Killick was at the wiokets for three hours for his 133. When stumps were drawn after a short day’ s play, the Sussex score stood at 249 for five wickets, and so well did Braun, Newham and Tate bat on the next day, that the iuniogg was closed at 399 for seven wickets. Worcestershire, at the end of the day, had scored 156 for seven ^ iekets, H. K . Foster and Arnold having made 133 of this total between them. On Saturday, Worcestershire had to follow on with 202runs to wipe off, and loi-t three wickets in three successive balls to Relf when the total was 13. Despite this bad start, the county made a good fight, thanks chiefly to the fine play o f Corden and Pearson, and the innings defeat was saved; S ussex . Played at Cambridge on May 29, 30 and 31. Ireland won by 58 runs. The Irishmen had good reason to congratulate themselves on the result of this match, for they played very sound cricket. Their tail very greatly distinguished itself on the first day, Ross, Adair, Harvey and Andrews all taking charge of the bowl ing in the most determined manner. An excellent start had previously been made by Sir T. C. O’Brien, F. H. Browning and the Hon. D. O’Brien. Cam bridge lost a wicket for 14 before stumps were drawn. On the following day they were dismissed for 241, and *ere thus 98 runs behind, but pot down two of their opponents wickets for 24. Rain greatly inter- fer*d with the cricket. On Saturday the Irishmen could not do much, but thanks to their lead on the first innings they were able to put Cambridge in to make 220 to win after lunch. The University made a good fight, and when Penn and Sewellwere together, both playing veiy good cricket, it looked as if their side might pull the match out of the fire. I reland . First innings. Surrey won by an innings and 10 runs. For their success over Hampshire Surrey have in great measure to thank Brockwell, who in addition to playing a very fine innings of 80 not out, took four Worcestershire wickets in the first innings for 36 and three in the second for 32. The match was frequently interrupted by rain, and on the second day only half an hour’s cricket was possible. The Hampshire men did not score enough runs in their first innings to give them a chance of victory, and, moreover, during part of the time ihat Surrty were batting, the wicket was too soft to give tbe bowlers much assistance.
