Cricket 1902

148 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. M a t 22 , 1902. makes it especially noteworthy. Yorkshire gained a very characteristic victory over Lancashire, at Sheffield, the match being a triumph for Jackson, who, in addition to playing the highest innings in the game, obtained in all eight wickets for thirteen runs. Granted that the wickets he obtained were those of the tail-end of the team, his success is still of an unusual nature, and shows that the Yorkshire attack has been greatly strengthened by his ability to form one of the team. A BOOK OF STATISTICS* Many have been the complaints during the past fortnight of the inclemency of the weather, and followers of the game have found it a difficult matter to pass the time between the showers and so relieve the monotony of a long wait. Mr. Home Gordon have now come to their assistance by issuing his “ Cricket Form at a Glance” (p.p. xv., 314), the perusal of which will enable enthusiasts to spend many pleasant hours. The book is wholly statistical, but the figures are arranged in such a manner that they cannot fail to interest any followers of the game. The doings of all players who have taken part in great matches since 1878 are faithfully recorded, and so clear in the arrangement that the career of any cricketer—batsman, bowler or wicket-keeper—can be seen at a glance. Individual scores are not recorded, but the averages of any player for any year during the period mentioned can be readily ascertained. The second portion of the book is devoted to matter connected with the visits of Australian teams to this country, and this part of the publication should be especially welcome at the present time. The author, in his introductory remarks, says “ The aim has been to supply at a glance all the informa tion which can possibly be needed about English cricket within the period.’ * How well he has succeeded in his endeavours must be patent to all. The lime and thought expended on the com pilation must have been enormous, and enthusiasts owe a deep debt of gratitude to Mr. Home Gordon for the great pains he has taken over his self-imposed task. A very interesting introduction to the volume has been penned by Lord Hawke, who gossips so pleasantly upon past and present cricket as to make one wish he would more frequently write about the game for which he has done so much. • “ Cricket Form at a Glance,” 1878 to 1902, and the Australians in England.
