(B y O ur S p e cia l C orrespondent.) The first of the new Scottish County Championship matches was played at Cupar on May 5. Neither Fifeshire nor Aberdeenshire were at full strength ; the former without T. Johnston, of the Grange, and A. J. MacGregor being rather weakly represented. Heavy rain having fallen at intervals, and then a strong sun appearing, did not tend to improve the wicket. Fifeshire, who batted first, made a wretched start, H. G. Wedderburn being dismissed at 2 by W. Webster, who shared the bowling with Johnston (pro.). The next man, R. K. Smith, had to leave at 11, caught by Webster, and when 19 appeared the third wicket went down, Mitchell also falling a victim to a catch by the same bowler. A regular rot had now set in and the whole tide were soon disposed of for the very small total of 38. W. Webster was practically unplayable, taking six wickets for 14. Johnston secured four for 19. Aberdeenshire then went in but made an even worse beginning than their opponents. J. A. Scharenguival, a West Indian cricketer, and R. T. Reid opened to the bowling of Taylor and Mitchell. The former was bowled by Mitchell with the score at 4, and then Taylor in quick succession dismissed W. Webster, W. Kitchen, and W. S. Brown. A better complexion was put upon the game when R. T. Reid and W. M’lntosh became associated. Shortly before the Fifeshire score was passed, Reid, when he had compiled 15, was bowled by Mitchell. Of the remaining batsmen, W. M’lntosh (17), F. Baxter (10), H. H. Smith (not out 18), and Johnston (15), all did well. The Aberdeenshire total realised 94, Fifeshire thus being beaten by 56 runs. Bowling for the losers, Taylor had six wickets and Mitchell three. R. K. Smith secured M’lntosh’s wicket.
