Cricket 1902

M a y 8, 1902. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 117 THE FRESHMEN’S MATCH AT CAMBRIDGE. Played on the University Ground on May 1, 2 and 3. Mr. Wilson’s Side won by six wickets. Chiefly through some excellent leg-break bowling by A. Buxton, the old Haorovian, and fine batting by K. R. B. Fry, the old Cheltonian, Mr. E. R. Wilson’s side won this match prettily easily. For Mr. Dowson’s side, H. C. M’Donell, the young Surrey cric keter, bowled extremely well in both innings, but he was not at all well backed up. As he also scored 26 (the top score) and 38 (the second score), he accomplished a fine all round performance in the match. The only other notable feature of the game was the batting of Mr. Kudd in the second innings of Mr. Dowson’s side, when runs were very badly wanted. M b. E. M. D ow son ’s Side. M r . LONDON COUNTY. Played at Edgbaston on May 1 , 2 and 3. Drawn. It was a strong team which the London County put in the field for this match, and it proved a good deal too strong for Warwick shire, although the latter escaped inevitable defeat by the opportune arrival of rain. There was nothing of note in the first innings of Warwickshire, except the batting of Mr. Fishwick, who although blessed with a large share of luck, played a decidedly good innings. Braund and Llewellyn bowled with great effect on a wicket which helped them a little. When stumps were drawn on the first day, the visitors, for the loss of only two men (although these were W. G. and Mr. Beldam) were within 7 of their opponents’ total. This good beginning was continued next day, Mr. Woodplaying themost skilful and painstaking cricket for 97, a valuable innings which lasted for three hours and a quarter, while Mr. Murdoch was again in great form, showing much of the cleverness of years ago. The most attractive batting of the day was seen during the partnership of Braund and Mr. W. Smith, who, in about half an hour, put on 67 runs. When stumps were drawn, Warwickshire, with four wickets down in their second innings, were still 131 runs behind. Rain interrupted play very consider ably on Saturday, and Warwickshire, thanks to steady and stubborn cricket by Lilley, and a most welcome stand of an hour at a critical time by Lilley and Charlesworth, were able to make a drawn game. Played in the Parks on May 1, 2 and 3. Drawn. Rain played a considerable part in this match, of which the most noticeable feature was the batting of R. S. Darling, O. M. Samson, B. A. Collins, A. S. Wetherall, and M. Bonham-Carter. The bowlers did not greatly distinguish themselves, but C. W. Wordsworth, M. Bonham-Carter, and A. C. von Ernsthausen had fairly good analyses. M r .
