As Blythe had injured his left hand while practising at the nets he was left out of the English team, together with Mr. Jessop and Barnes. The match was played on matting, the outlying positions of the ground being distinctly rough. The home team made 190, Mr. Jones taking ten wickets for 49, Gunn six for 62, and Lilley one for 38. When the first day’s play ended the Englishmen had scored 134 for six wickets, Mr. McGahey 55, Gunn not out 21, and Hayward 24. On the following day the Englishmen having reached 192 for nine wickets declared; Braund was not out 40. The home team in their second innings made 166 for 16 wickets (Newland 62), and then, unwisely as it turned out, declared, leaving the visitors to make 164, a task which they accomplished for the loss of four wickets. Mr. Garnett andMr. Jones both happened to be in form, so that the runs were very quickly made; the former scored 54 and the latter 41, while Tyldesley made 36. In the second innings of the local team, Mr. Robson took six wickets for 41, Mr. Jones four for 49, Braund three for 44, and Quaife three for 12. THE MATCH AGAINST EIGHTEEN OE BENDIGO. ( tenth of th e tour .) Played at Bendigo (Victoria), on December 26 and 27. Drawn. From the English team Mr. MacLaren, Blythe, Braund and Lilley stood down, the eleventh place being filled by Mr. Green, a cousin of Mr. C. E. Green, the famous old Cambridge and Essex cricketer. The visitors went in first, and made 306 on the first day for the loss of seven wickets, the chief scorers being H GO Mo w 0 3 CO £ CO I 3 QD 0 9 BUSSEY’S
