It is to be regretted that, ow ing to the incomplete manner in which scores were drawn up during the first few decades of last century, it is impossible to state the number of balls delivered by each bowler and the number of runs scored therefrom. One cannot fail to notice the great amount of excellent work done for the county by members of the Lillywhite family, the name occurring regularly in the matches from 1825 to 1883. The Lillywhites were to Sussex cricket what the Graces were to Gloucestershire and the Walkers to Middlesex. "William Gilbert Grace and Frederick W illiam Lillywhite : these are the two greatest names in all cricket history. [To be continued.) RECENT LEG ISLAT ION . AN ALTOGETHER REMARKABLE RECORD. It may be doubted whether any of our cricket legislators realise what a vast amount of law making, law altering, tampering with the rules, instructions to umpires, etc., etc., has taken place during the last two years. It far exceeds the alterations which have been made in the same time in the laws of all the games and sports known to mankind. On the eve of a general meeting of the M .C.C. at which the proposed new l.b.w . law will be discussed, and perhaps passed, it may possibly serve a good purpose to recapitu late the efforts which have been made of late by cricket legislators to satisfy the ever-increasing demand for reform made by cricketers whose active day is over— it can hardly be disputed that present-day players have, as a body, made no demand at all for reforms. The new era of reforma tion may be said to have begun at the end of 1898 with the passing of the new County Qualification laws. These, with the exception of Rule 5, were to come into force on January 1st, 1900, but Rule 5 came into operation at once. The new rules, which are still in operation, and are as yet working in a very satisfactory manner, although there has hardly been time to try them severely, are as follow s: 1.—A cricketer born in one county and residing in another may not play for more than one county during the season. 2.— Qualification by Birth .—A cricketer is always eligible to play for the county of his birth. 3.— Qualification by Residence .—A cricketer is qualified to play for any county in which he has resided for the previous 24 months, and is residing ; hut (a) The mere acquirement or hiring of a tenement, unless used as a bona Jide home, doesnotconstitute ‘ ‘residence,’ * (b) The occupation of a tenement during the cricket season only does not constitute “ residence.”
