Cricket 1901
?0 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A p r i l 18, 1901. seven p.m . This always used to be the case at Lord’s, and I think also at the Oval and most other county grounds. The change to 6-30 was, I believe intro duced b y the Australians, but it should have been confined to their matches. But I was honified to find, last year, that there was an adjournment for tea ! Shades of bygone heroes, what do you think of this ? It is enough to make you turn in your graves. “ T ea-tim e” is supposed to be limited to fifteen minutes— m y experience was that it was never less than twenty and frequently more before play began again. If this innovation were done away with, and the alterations I have mentioned above effected, at least three or four hours more would be added to the time for play, which would cer tainly enable many matches to be finished which are now drawn. I should add that the umpires ought to be instructed to be strict in requiring adherence to the rule that only two minutes is to be allowed after the fall of a wicket for the next batsman to come in. This rule was flagrantly infringed during the last University match at Lord’s. This letter has reached much too great a length, but I am sure that if the three matters I have referred to were carefully considered and corrected, there would be no necessity for the proposed alteration in the “ l.b .w .” rule, which I cannot too strongly condemn. Yours faithfully, Jamaica. A. W . L . H emm in g . March 25, 1901. TH E F IX T U R E S FOR 1901. APRIL. 21.Leyton, EsBex County C.C. Annual Meeting and Dinner 24. Nottingham, Notts Colts’ Match 29.
