M arch 28, 1901 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 45 will, of course, have many imitators. The question is whether county clubs, already burdened by enormous expenses, could stand the racket if matches were finished quickly, instead of being pro longed to three days as they generally are at the present lime. There is one possibility about the proposed new law which is generally overlooked : it might have the effects of enabling all the members of each side to bat in ordinary afternoon matches. If this should prove to be the case, such a law would be welcomed b y many thousands of earnest cricketers who, in match after match, fail to get an innings ow ing to the closure system. But it is to be feared that the supporters of the law take very little interest in what its results may be, except in the case of first-class matches. There is another possibility about the proposed law which is not quite so pleasant: it is that it may lead to innumerable rows on cricket grounds. The modem spectator has learned the lesson that he is of considerable import ance, and if things do not go exactly as he likes, he can and does make himself very unpleasant. It would be a miserable state of affairs if umpires were treated in the same way as football referees have been, but there is no saying what a crowd might do if four or five of its favourite batsmen were summarily dismissed by the new rule. Of course all these things will be taken into consideration b y the M .C.C., who will also remember that if they pass the law they will be making an experiment which may be a failure, and from which there can be no turning back without a dangerous loss of prestige to the club, for after the withdrawal of the net scheme, it would be almost fatal to make another mistake. A peculiar incident occurred in this match. Auckland were 135 runs behind on the first inniogs. There was no one on either side able to quote the terms of the new follow -on rule and, in their dilemma, the players adhered to the old rule and Auckland followed on. Faring badly, they were beaten by an innings and 13 runs. If the new rule had been observed, Auckland m ight have escaped defeat. F. Holdsworth, of Wellington, was run cut off a no-ball.
