Cricket 1901

466 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. D e c . 19, 1901. League match to play at the time. A little later he was more fortunate, and in the Leicestershire match at Manchester, towards the end of August, he acquitted himself well, playing a useful innings of 32, besides taking six pf the ten wickets in Leicestershire’ s first innings for seventy runs. So satisfied b y this time were the Lancashire Committee with his all-round ability that negociations were begun with Burnley to release him of the engage ment he had made with the club for next year. This the Burnley folk did at once, so that Barnes is now free to play re gularly in the Lancashire Eleven. In the first week of September came the intelligence that he had been invited by A. C. MacLaren to join the team he was taking totAustralia. To the majority of cricketers outside Lancashire, the news came as a great surprise. Doubts were freely expressed as to the policy of promoting a player practically from club cricket to undertake the highest possible position on the cricket field. For a time Barnes was certainly the topic of con versation in cricket circles in Australia as well as> here. That he had already eminently justified A. C. MacLaren’s selection, his performance at Melbourne, in the middle of last month, when he took’ twelve Yictorian wickets would alone prove, were there not the confirma tion of other good performances, notably in the test match just over. In his early days, he was essentially a fast bowler, with an occasional slow breakback; latterly he has mixed his pace to a greater extent, and this variety has naturally added to his success. Though not strictly a fast bowler, as fast bowlers are regarded nowadays, he comes along at a good pace, and, in addition to a slight off-break, at times makes the ball get up a good deal. Six feet in height, he has great advantages as a batsman, and is not by any means to be despised as a run- getter. As be is now only twenty-seven years of age, there is plenty of time yet to develop his all-round cricket. In any case, there are possibilities which will invest his performances in the Lancashire X I . next year with special interest. The follow ing will show his doings for Rish- ton and Burnley during the last five yea rs:— For Rishton— BATTING AVERAGES. No. Times Most of not Total, in an Date. inns. out. runs. inns. At the annual general meeting of the above association, held at Lord’s on the 10th ult., the following alterations in the rule were carried, subject to the approval of the M.C.C. Rule 3 : “ Points in the Second Divi sion of the County Championship Com petition shall be reckoned as follows: Three points shall be scored for a win in a completed match. Should the match not be completed, the side leading on the first innings shall score one point. Should a result on the first innings not be ar rived at, no points shall be scored; in the event of a tie in a completed match, or in a match decided on the first innings, the points shall be divided. “ The county which during the season shall have obtained the greatest propor tionate number of points shall be reckoned the Champion County of the Second Division.” The following resolution proposed by P. J. de Paravicini (Bucks), and seconded by Rev. P. E. Mainwaiiog (Staffordshire), was carried subject to the provisions that due notice of any experiment should be given to the Association by M.C.C :—- “ The Minor Counties being of opinion that there is considerable difficulty in making any alterations in the Laws of Cricket with the object of reducing the number of drawn matches without hav ing any prcposed alterations tried over a series of games, now express their will ingness to give a trial in their Second Division Competition matches during the season of 1902 to any experiment recom mended by the M.C.C. Committee.” Mr. R. H. Mallett was re-elected hon. sec., receiving hearty thanks for his past services. The only change in the constitution of the Committee was the election of Major P. St. L. Wheble, as representative of Bucks in place of Cam bridgeshire. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr. F. E. Lacey, sec. M.C.C. for the valuable assistance he has given to the Association. The following Counties were repre sented at the meeting :—Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Berks, Cornwall, Dorset, Dur ham, Glamorgan, Hertfordshire, Mon mouthshire, Norfolk, Northamptonshire, Northumberland, Oxford, Staffordshire, Surrey, Wiltshire, Worcestershire, and Yorkshire.
