Cricket 1901
444 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. O c t . 31, 1901. CRICKET IN INDIA. [B y a C orrespon den t .] The Parsi Presidency return match was played at Poona on September 12th, 13th and 14th, and was easily won by the Presidency X I. by 192 runs. The Presidency X I. won the toss and went in to bat. They scored 220 runs in the first innings. Five of their best wickets were ;down for 45, when Weatherby—the Old Winchester boy and the hero of this match—came to the rescue of his side, playing a most valuable and faultless innings of 74 runs. Sprott made 68, but gave a simple catch when he had made 12, and was missed at mid- off by Kharas. The Parsis scored 203 runs, out of which Meherhoniji, the Colt, got 60. He played a remarkably good innings, batting in a free and attractive style, and was dismissed by a very diffi cult one-handed catch by Sale. Mistry, Bapasola and D. Kanga also played well. In the second innings Douglas and Sale put on 166 runs for the first wicket. Sale scored 93, but was missed at short- slip by Mehta when he had made 13. Douglas played a very patient and faultless game, scoring 91 runs. The third wicket fell at 266, when collapse set in, and all were out for 308 runs. At this stage, just before the commencement of the second innings of the Parsis, rain came down heavily, so the stumps were drawn for the day. On the last day of the match the Parsis had to go in to face the big total of 308 runs, and the wicket having become bumpy and caked by the sun they could only make 133 runs. Daruwalia and Pavri were the only men who played with any confidence. The Parei fielding, especially in point of catching, was very disappointing, easy catches being missed. On the other hand, on the Presidency side, Weatherby —at point—took two most difficult catches, getting rid of Mistry and Bapasola when they were well set- in bowling, Bapasola, for the Parsis, was a long way the best. He took five wickets in the first and six wickets in the second innings. For the Englishmen, John and Cheetham (slow bowlers) took three and four wickets respectively in the first, and Douglas six wickets (when the wicket was tricky) in the second ini ings. The Parsis were beaten by the Presi dency X I. at all points of the game, and the latter well deserved to win. Both the teams were invited to lunch by His Excellency the Governor, Lord North- cote, on the second day of the match. P resid en cy . This match attracted a big crowd, as the three well-known players of different nationalities were taking part in this game. All the three were playing on the Bangalore side, to wit, C. T. Studd, of Middlesex fame, Dr. Pavri, the Parsi captain, and Mr. Jayaram, the Madras Hindoo “ crack.” The Bangalore captain, Col. Peterkin, won the toss, and went in to bat. The “ Wanderers ” in their first innings put on 156 runs, of which Mr. E. Priestley, of Secunderabad, made 43 in a very free style, and Captain Fleming 46 in his usual careful way. The Bombay Gym khana scoring 178 runs, got a lead of 22 runs in the first innings. Towards this Mr. S. Powell contributed 44, and Baloo, the best Hindoo bowler in India, 29 runs. For the Bangalore X I., Pavri took five wickets for 45, Fleming three for 76, and Studd one for 35 runs. For the Bombay Gymkhana, Rumboll got four wickets for 32, Baloo three for 46, and Milne two for 50 runs. In the second innings for the Bangalore team, Mr. E. Priestley was again promi nent. He played a very superb and dashing innings of 60, although Baloo beat him time after time bowling at his best. Jayaram made 34, but was shaky all the time he was in, and was thrice missed off Baloo’s bowling. The total ran up to 166. Mr. Studd was unfortu nate in both innings, as in the first innings he was caught at slip off a ball which he tried to let alone but which touched his wrist, and in the second innings he was given out stumped, although the majority of the opponents said that he was not out. The Bombay Gymkhana had two hours to make 145 runs, but Pavri bowled so well for the Bangalore that the whole side were all out for 93 runs. Just one minute before time Pavri took the last two wickets in the last over. Mr. E. Ward and Mr. J. Milne scored 22 and 21 respectively, the latter making five 4’s and a 1 in one over of Captain Fleming. In the Bombay Gymkhana, Baloo took four wickets for 64, Sale four for 40, and Rumboll two for 20 runs. For the Bangalore side, Pavri took six wickets for 32 runs, at the same time performing the much-coveted “ hat trick ” in his second over, securing the wickets of Sale, Milne and Wingfield. Studd took four wickets for only 15 runs. B a n g a lo r e First innings. M. E. Pavri, c Milne, Rumboll ..................... Capt. Fleming, b Milne B. Jayaram. b Milne ... . E.
