U n fortu n ately th is m atch, the first of the tw o annual m atches played betw een the Presiden cy and the Parsees, w as alm ost spoiled b y the w eather, w hich, in a deceitful m anner, looked m ost prom ising before the gam e began, and deluded an imm ense crow d of n atives into p u ttin g in an appearance long before the gam e began. I t was know n th at the w icket would be slow because a good d eal of rain had fallen on th e previous even in g. B y th e tim e for tiffin the P resid en cy, who sam pled the w icket first, w ere all out fo r 89, M ehta h avin g a fine analysis for th e ParseesJ A m istake was m ade b y the first batsm en in try in g to p lay them selves in w ith th e utm ost caution, Captain D ouglas, the best bat on the side, ta k in g three quarters of an hour to score eigh t runs, and after the d ow nfall of the first tw o or three w ickets the side never recovered. S till th in gs m igh t have been w e ll if the w eather had held up. B u t h eavy rain fe ll before th e Parsees could go in , and the Presiden cy bow lers w ere greatly handicapped b y a w et ball, and a w ick et w h ich w as m uch easier th an it had been in the m orning. T h e first tw o Parsee batsm en, K a n g a and D u ra- w alla, put up 48 for the first w icket when K a n ga was dism issed fo r 21, after b a ttin g an hour. D u ra w alla had then m ade the same total, b u t he afterw ards settled down to a tedious gam e, and w hen he w as at last dis m issed he had been at th e w ickets another hour for an additional six runs. B illim o ria aroused the enthusiasm of the crow d b y h ittin g a ball for six over the tents into th e G y m khana G ardens. M istri and M eherhom ji both played v e ry good cricket, and the in n in gs ended for 176, so th at the Presiden cy had to m ake 92 to save the in n in gs defeat.
