Cricket 1901
38 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. M arch 28, 1901. And I wish also to mention here, and call to the notice of all cricketers of the present date, that about half-a-century ago no money at all was made or gained by “ the gate ” at Lord’s ! None, actually n on e; for what was taken there seldom cleared even the expenses of the match. Cricket was then played for itself alone, and donations to pay the cost of various contests as arranged for the season at “ headquarters” were necessary, while the comparatively few members on the M.C.C. books were annually and indi vidually solicited to subscribe largely, or to the best of their ability, in addition to their usual subscriptions. In and about 1844 Mr. Roger Kynaston, the then popular secretary of the M.C.C. was a well-known “ figure h ead” at the pavilion at Lord’s, with his book of con tributions for this or that match, and v. ithout that aid and help, and also f.rth er additions from enthusiasts, c rta in matches could never have come off at a l l ! This subscription book was subse quently (I forget the date) abolished, but things are now changed indeed at L ord’s, and elsewhere too, though several of the so-called improvements and mutations have caused quite a reverse result to what they were intended to bring about, at least such is my opinion. The last new plan, method, or system, promulgated a short time back, by which certain of the best bowlers of the day are mentioned by name in a published list as being foul as regards their delivery is, I think, an odious innovation. Cricket has lost much of its former admirable simplicity, etpecially of late years, b y frequent and annual alterations and additions, while through them our noble game will not be improved I feel certain. If, however, chaEges are really needed, let them be drawn up and arranged so that they may not be the cause of hot disputations in any way, as this last "u k a se" will certainly produce and pro voke everywhere and on all grounds this coming cricket season. Sad is it to find that the admirable old laws compiled more than one hundred years back are being continually clouded and mystified by additional uncalled fo r and superfluous matter, for that tuch is the case there can scarcely be any doubt at all. I wish to add one more small fact regarding our great national game, and it is this: Which county has been, is now, or will be, the champion county (so- called) at cricket during this year or that (past, present or future) is not everything at cricket by a long way, though just now unfortunately and erroneously such seems to be considered the case. I quote an old pcet— “ Like leaves on trees the race of man is found, Now green in youth, now withering on the ground, Another race the following spring supplies, They fall successive and successive rise, So generations in their turn decay, So flourish these, when those have passed away.” S U S S E X C R IC K E T A N D C R IC K E T E E S .
