Surrey at the Oval), the following notes on Lockwood’s career appeared in the Sportsman last Saturday :— W illiam H . Lockw ood was bom at Old Eadford, in N ottingham shire, on M arch 25, 1868, and the N otts Foretst ground w as the scene of his earliest cricket. P layin g there w ith the Forest W anderers, he had the advantage of early practice w ith such good men as M r. J. A . D ixon and others. H is first appearance for N otts was against G loucestershire, at M orton-in-the-M arsh, in June, 1886, and his last against W a rw ick shire, at Edgbaston, in A u gu st of the follow in g year. In 1887 Lockw ood obtained an engagem ent at the O val, and p layed fo r Surrey as soon as he becam e qualified. H is first m atch for his adopted county was against Essex, at the O val, in M ay, 1889. In all m atches in w hich he has represented S u rrey, Lockwood has commenced 323 innings (not out on 24 occasions) and scored 7,091 runs, an average of 23*71 runs an innings. W ith the b all he has obtained, in the same m atches, 87 0 w ickets for 15*031 runs, or a cost of 17*27 runs each. These figures include all Surrey m atches down to the end of 1900. H is chief scores in im portant m atches are : 168 for S u rrey v. Leicestershire, at Leicester, 1890; 165, Surrey v. Leicestershire, at the O val, 1900 ; 158, Surrey v. W arw ickshire, at the O val, 1895; 131, Surrey v. Lancashire, at the O val, 1899 ; 129, Su rrey v. Som erset shire, at Taunton, 1899; 127, Surrey v. W arw icksh ire, at Edgbaston, 1894; 117 not out, S u rrey v. H am pshire, at {Southampton, 1899 ; 109, Surrey v. H am pshire, at the Oval, 1898 ; 104 not out, Surrey v. W orcestershire, a t the O val, 1900; 103, Surrey v . Oxford U n iversity, at the O val, 1898 ; 102, Surrey v. Y orksh ire, at the O val, 1890 ; 102, Surrey v. I n 1894-5 he visited A u stralia as a member of M r. Stoddart’s F iis t'le a m . In all first-class m atches in w hich he played in 1899 he scored 1,272 runs and obtained 117 w ickets, and this excellent performance he im proved upon during 1900, when his number of runs and w ickets were 1,367 and 125 respectively. F o r fcurrey v . W arw icksh ire, at the O val, in 1891, Lockwood obtained four w ickets w ith consecutive balls in the first innings of the latter, a perform ance equalled b y few and surpassed by none. One of Lockw ood’s best performances with the bat w as for Surrey against N otts, at the O val, in 1889, when, in a low -scoring match, he and A bel (59) made 140 for the first w icket in the second innings. Lockw ood scored 83 on th is occasion against the bow ling of Sh acklock, A ttew ell, Richardson (H .), Flow ers, Barnes, and M r. D ixon, without g iv in g a chance. Lockw ood has taken part in fourteen p art nerships of 150 or more runs in first-class m atches, as fo llo w s: 287 for fifth w icket, with A b el, Surrey v. Lockw ood has assisted the P layers on thirteen occasions against the G entlem en, first takin g part in these matches in 1892. H e has commenced tw enty-tw o innings (twice not out) and scored 313 runs, giv in g an average of 15 65 runs an innings.
