Cricket 1901

Sept. 12, 1901. ORlCKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. 411 THE HAST INGS FEST IVAL . G E N T L E M E N v. P L A Y E R S . P layed at H astings on Septem ber 9 ,10 and 11. D raw n. S till favoured "by fine w eather, visitors to H astings who attended the cricket ground on M onday (after rain on Sunday evening), had a d elightfu l tim e of it, for a strong batting team of G entlem en w as at the w ickets all day. M oreover, n early every man gave a good sam ple of w hat he could do, and there have been few opportunities of seeing on a single occasion the methods of so m any fine batsm en. T here m ust have been m any on the ground who rem em bered D r. G race when he was in his prim e, and his skill in placing the b all m ust have seemed to them to have fallen off v e ry little since th at far distant tim e. T h e w icket had been affected b y the rain but it w as, nevertheless, an easy one pretty n early all day, and the bowlers w ere never seen to advantage. T h e G entlem en’s team m igh t undoubtedly have been stren gth ened considerably, but it was a sporting team, and n early all its members could bow l more or less, so th at there was the prospect of a good m atch. T h e D octor and M r. A. O. Jones put on 119 for the first w icket in an hour and fo rty m inutes, and this good b egin nin g w as w ell followed up. M r. M ason and M r. Jones put up 93 runs fo r tho n ext w icket, the partnership bein g broken b y the dism issal of M r. Jones for 105, an adm irable innings w h ich had lasted fo r tw o hours and tw en ty-five m inutes. M r. T a ylo r stayed long enough for spectators to see w hat a fine bat he is, and then in tw en ty-tw o m inutes M r. Jessop scored 45 out of 61. Then came the only tw o failures of the day, Captain G reig and M r. Sm ith— b y no m eans the tw o worst bats on the side— only m akin g 9 runs between them . T h e close of the innings was quite rem arkable, and M r. Sinclair, M r. G oldie and Mr.J H alliw ell made the m ost brillian t hits. Indeed, M r. G oldie’s innings was one of the features of the m a tch ; he was on ly in for a quarter of an hour for his 40 runs, and had the pleasin g experience of scoring 18 off an over from Khodes. W h a t w ith the heavy dews and th e p robability th at the w icket would be queer in the m orning, the Players had not m uch to look forw ard to except a possible draw . B row n and T unnicliffe made a good start and then for a tim e M r. Sinclair and M r. M ason w ere irresistible. H alf the w ickets w ere down for 115, and eigh t for 141, and then a sudden change came over the gam e. T yld esley, who required 95 runs to reach his th ird thousand fo r the season, was in great form , and w hen he w as joined by V in e, he had an opportunity of distinguishing him self, for V in e kept up his w icket steadily. A t lunch tim e the total w as 195 for eigh t w ickets, the bow lin g bein g still unchanged. A fte r lu n ch the same tw o bowlers who had been on from the first w ere again given the ball, and even tually the innings closed for 238. T yld esley had the satisfaction of m aking one run more than was required to bring his total to 3,000 for the season. T h e Gentlem en w ere 168 runs on, but w ent in again and collapsed in the most unaccountable m anner before Rhodes and H irst. In consequence of their breakdow n th ey on ly left the Players w ith the task of m akiqg 228. O f these 25 were scored before stumps w ere drawn. Yesterday the Players w ould in all p robability have won easily if it had not been for rain. G e n tle m e n . First innings. W. G. Grace, b Hayward ... 54 A. O.
