Cricket 1901

A ug . 22, 1901. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 359 N O T T S V . M ID D L E S E X . P layed at T ren t B rid ge on A u gu st 15, 16 and 17. D raw n. It was not possible to begin cricket on the first day of the match until about half-past two, and then the bowlers had the best of the situation. Except for two good innings by Mr. J. Douglas and Mr. Bosan quet there was nothing in the Middlesex batting t > call for attention. J. Gunn bowled admirably. When stumps were drawn Notts had scored 16 with out loss, against a total of 167. On the following morning the wicket played queerly. and, against the bowling of Hearne and Mr. Wells, Notts did not fare as well as Middlesex had done, and the latter had a lfad of 4«. Before the second day’s play ended Middesex had a load of 279 runs, having scored 233 for the loss of six wickets. Mr. R. N. Douglas played a very fine not out innings of 82. and Mr. Bosanquet was also in g eat form, hitting up 76 in ninety minutes. There were useful scores by Mr. J. Douglas and Mr. C. M. Wells. On Safurday, Middlesex were able to declare at one o’clock, leaving Notts to make 319 in about four hours and a half. As the wicket was not yet perfect, and as Mr. Jones was soon dismissed, Notts made no attempt to get the runs, but contented themselves with going for a draw. In this they were completely successful, thanks chiefly to a good innings of 85 by Shrewsbury and another of 102 not out ty Iremonger. The latter was batting for the whole time that the innings lasted, and his steady but determined resistance to the bowling had not a little to do with the success of his side in making defeat impossible.
