Cricket 1901

3 5 4 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A u g . 2 2 , 1 9 0 1 started on the tour.” “ What measures do you take to encourage young players ? ” “ W e do the best we can, the older players keeping a good look out, giving advice, and trying to induce youngsters to practise. Players who have little sons begin to teach them as soon as they are able to hold a bat in their hands, .and in this way much good will eventually result; it has always been one of the Irawbacks to the progress of Dutch cricket that boys do not take up the game until they are fourteen or fifteen years old, and even more. W ith the com ing generation it will, we hope, be different. Isbriicker is going to take a set of materials home with him and play on his lawn with his small boy, who is four years old. It is, I think, a healthy sign that nowadays one sees small boys playing, with a tree for stumps, or any thing handy.” “ When did you yourself begin to play ? ” “ N ot until I was thirteen or fourteen years old. I had seen English teams play, and had watched them with awe and admiration, but it did not occur to me that I could take part in such an apparently mysterious game. But on one red letter day in my life some o f my boy friends who were goin g to play a game among themselves, said, ‘ W on’t you come and have a game ? ’ I went with them and never looked back. I never took to bow ling, and although I go on for my club, the Hague, I always feel that I shall never do any good at it. Coops is the best bowler at the H ague.” Besides him, the Hague C.C. have a splendid bowler in Mr. 8. de Groot, who, being a military student, could not join the party on their tour to England. “ Is Mr. Postuma a member of your c lu b ? ” “ No. H e plays for Haarlem, which is a strong side. H e is left hand, medium to fast, and breaks from both sides, his pitch beiDg accurate in either case. He is unquestionably the best bow ler in Holland. H e holds the record for the highest score ever made in Holland, which is 153 not out. I should say that the batsman with the best style in our team is Bourlier, who, although a Frenchman, learned all his cricket at the Hague. Hisgen is a very strong and very steady player, and Schioder, the wicket-keeper o f our team, is a very good bat to o .” “ Had you ever batted on turf before you came to England for this tour ? ” “ No. Only Postuma, Schroder, Coops, and Bourlier had previously played in England. The rest of us found the turf so exceedingly fast that we could make nothing of the bow ling at first. The M.C.C. were kind enough to give us Qeeson, Attewell, Pike and Burns as practice bowlers, when we were at L ord’s on the two days after our arrival England. We thought them all very fine bowlers indeed, and Geeson puzzled us considerably, for of course we are not accustomed to this sort of bow ling on turf wickets.” “ Have you any idea how many players there are in Holland ? ” “ It would be impossible to say with any approach to accuracy, but 1 should imagine that there would be about a thousand. The Hague has the largest number of members— about a hundred, of whom half are playing members. Haarlem has thirty or forty.” W . A. B it t e s v o s t h . GRANVILLE v.
