A u g . 8 , 1 9 0 1 . CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 3 2 7 THE H AMPSTEAD C.O. SUSSEX WEEK. The Hampstead “ Week ” at Hastirgs and East bourne afforded good cricket and keen games. The three two-day matches played were all drawn, and presented a curious similarity in the actual play. In each match Hampstead won the toss. In every case the opposing side were set over 3C0runs to get in the fourth innings of the match, the numter in the first two matches being identical, viz.—340. It is only fair to say that a great cause of the failure to get the other sides out, after having a good lead, was the bad luck of Wheater being “ crocked” in stopping a hard return in the second innings at Hastings His bowling would have made a great difference as the wickets happened to be almost made for him. He played a masterly innings of 86 not out, the high°st score of the week. The team’s batting, taken right through, was excellent, every member of the fide at one time or other, making useful scores. Rowley amassed the highest aggregate 168 runs for six times out. HiR partnership with Orr in the second innings at the Saffrons (163 for the first wicket) was sound cricket. Orr went in first on every occasion, and the team owe much to his good judgment and cricket, as he had to face good bowling at its best every time. Barnett, Leigh-Ibbs and Matthews saved the side in the first innings at the Saffrons against Eastbourne. Barnett, when the first four wickets had fallen for 20 runs, broke up the attack by a patient and good innings of 82. Leigh-Ibts scored 52, the feature of his innings being some exceptionally well-timed leg strokes. Hamp stead’s score of 345 for sevf n wickets in the second innings against Hastings was well distributed. Wheater, 86 not out (already mentioned); Gibbon, 71, made quickly and confidently; Rowley, 63, by real good cricket; and Matthews, 53 not out, by a strong and forcing game. Ahsan-ul-hak gave a beautiful exhibition at Devonshire Park, making 36 and 72, and Farmiloe, by powerful drives, scored 64 very quickly, including twelve 4’s. It was very gratifying to see keen and good fielding by the team all through the week, and this was undoubtedly due to the enthusiasm imbued by the splendidly unselfish example Bet us by our skipper, 8. S. Pawling. His whole-heartedness from start to finish of the week was a wonderful encouragement to one and all, and when things were not going quite as we.l as we could have wished, there was no loss of keenness at any time. W . R. Moon behind the sticks kept the game going by sterling work ; at the Saffrons v. Eastbourne in the second inn ngs totalling 432 runs he gave no byes, and he brought off six brilliant catches besides stumping two men, mainly when wickets were badly wanted. The bowling suffered from want of variety, and as all the matches were played against runs and time, it was difficult to experiment too freely with many changes. Pawling did three fine performances, one in the first innings of each match, viz,, six wickets for 48 v. Hastings C. and G .; five for 47 v. Eastbourne; and four for 33 v. Devonshire Park. Good weather, good cricket, good opponents, good company, and good fun leave happy remembrances of a jolly tour. 1st MATCH v. HASTINGS CLUB & GROUND.- riayed at Hastings on July 29 and 30.
