BRIXTON WANDERERS CRICKET WEEK. On Saturday last the above c’ub concuded one of the most successful cricket weeks they have held— magnificent weather, good fellowship, and close finishes characterising every match. On Monday, the home team having won the toss, went in first and lost eii?ht wickets fcr 141 runs, but s * energetically did “ the tail wag ’ that the innings closed for 260. Mitcham only scored 158 for six, but they too possessed a caudal appendage which perform d so well, that the visitors won by 16runs with two wickets in ha'd. On Tuesday the Briuton Wanderers were a?aio fortunate in obtaining first knock, but did n^t take full advantage of their good fortune, being all out for 170. Hampton Wick however, hardly availed themselves of their opportunity, as nine wickets were down for 166, and had it not been for a catch being missed in the long-fleld at a critical moment (as also had happened the day before), the home team might have won—as it was the visitors won by 23 runs. On Wednesday the captain was again fortunate in winning the tx. ss, but with six wickets down for 77, the home side did not appear to great advantage, but at this point Dame Fortune kindly looked in, and when the captain who had knocked up 123 by excel lent cricket, assisted by Gale, who played an equally line inning9, was bowled. 208 runs had been put on for the seventh wicket. On the completion of Gale’s century the innings was declared closed. The oppon ents, Lovell’s XI.. played a capital uphill game, but were all disposed of just before \ime for 123. In the evening an al fresco entertainment was given—the very ominous looking thunder clouds fortunately disappearing about nine o’clock, and a gloriously starry evening proved a valuable adjunct to a most pleasant day. On Thursday the match against Surrey Club and Ground was capital from start to finish. Mr. Graburn having won thi toss naturally batted first, and when the ianings closed just before four, it was seen that the home team had a stiftish bit of work before them. However, they buckled too, and thanks to F Odell, 34; J. Faulkner, 89 ; Mason, 23 ; and btubb’s 60, the match was won amidst intense excitement at one minute before time. Stubbs who made the winning hit being finely caught in the long-fleld off the last ball of the last over. Oo F rid ay Norbu-y had first knock and scored 237—the Brixton Wanderers did not perform very brilliantly with the exception of Frank Odell, who made 61, but by steady play, especially by the last two men. Whitley and Brymer, they managed at the call of time to get within 19 of their opponents. On Satur day the home team once more were fortunate in obtaining first innings and scored 219. Sutton who lost five wickets for 24 then had a turn of luck, and in the end loet eight wickets for 192, or only 27 behind their opponents s:ore. Everything the whole week passed off most pleasantly, and every one appeared delighted with every one else. BRIXTON WANDERERS v. MITCHAM.—Played at East Dulwich on July 15. B bixton W a n d erers .
