Cricket 1901

J u l y 2 5 , 1 9 0 1 . CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 2 9 9 W . H . LOCKWOOD. A player of unlimited possibilities at bis best beyond a doubt. Under any circumstances a cricketer to be seriously rtckoned with in any class of cricket as a batmian as well as a bowler. What can be said in higher praise than that no English team of late years could have been regarded as fully representative without him ? H ow valuable his all round cricket has been to Surrey the last thirteen years can hardly be fully esti mated at the present time. His intro duction to Surrey cricket was of itself curious. He had been tried once or twice, we believe, for his native county of Notts in 1886. This was as a bowler, and though only eighteen years of age and quite strange to the better class of cricket, he did fairly well against tbe Australian team then here. In the absence of any encouragement from his own county he answered an advertise ment for ground bowlers issued by the Surrey County C.C. Tried with several others at tbe Oval it was his batting, oddly enough, that impressed the Surrey authorities more forcibly. It was un doubtedly to his promise as a bats man rather than a bowler that he owed bis introduction to Surrey cricket. In deed it was not until 1891, his third year in the Surrey eleven, that he showed any real sign of developing into a first-class bowler. It was not until then perhaps that he g o t any real opportunity. When he did get a real chance, he came at once to the front. W ith a long run and a high delivery he made the ball get up very quickly off the pitch, and when the wicket helped him at all he made the ball come back so quickly for a bowler of his extreme pace, as to be at times absolutely unplayable. For the last few years he has shared with Richardson the distinction of being the best fast bowler of the day. In a way he was the more dangerous, and even on a good wicket he was more dangerous than his great Surrey rival. When thoroughly fit and well he had certainly no superiors, and no bowler of late years has been regarded as so difficult by the great majority of batsmen. During the ten years since he first really came to the front as a bowler, his record for Surrey has been a brilliant one. Altogether, so the Daily Express tells us, he has bow led 7,115 overs since 1892 for 18,139 runs and 1,023 wickets, giving an average of 18 runs per wicket. That is presumably in first-class cricket, as his ag gregate for Surrey only shows 930 wickets at a similar cost. As a batsman since 1889 hehas scored 7,651 runs, inclusive of fifteen hundreds, in 340 innings for Surrey; or, in all, 8,796 runs for 415 innings, with thirty-eight not outs. W ith more favour able physical conditions his record would have been ever so much better. The very peculiarity of his delivery which has made him so dangerous has at the same time been a serious drawback to him, involving such a severe strain on his leg as to cause him at times serious trouble. Still, on great occasions he has generally risen to the emergency, and some of his very best performances have been done under great physical disadvantages. The best proof of his ability has been his frequent suc cesses on run-getting wickets when other bowlers have quite failed. A k< en cricketer, naturally one can fully sympathise with a great player when circumstances are all agninst him. That he is even now, on his day, the best fast bowler of the day, as well as one of quite the best all-round p-ofessional cricketers, his performance in the recent matches between the Gentlemen and Players will show. A hundred and eighteen runs for twica out, and twelve wickets at a cost of thirteen runs a- piece, this was his entire record for tbe two games. A good fellow in himself, Lockwood has a host o f friends. One can only hope that the weather will be on its best behaviour, and that the match itself will make for the substantial benefit he has so thoroughly earned. LONDON SCOTTISH v.
