Cricket 1901
J uly 18, 190i. CitfCKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 283 T h e match between the South Africans and Worcestershire ended in a tie, a result which has not occurred in a first- class match since 1894, when Surrey and Lancashire were the teamj engaged. W i l l anyone dispute the claim of L. Parbury, the slow bowler of Bedford shire, to be considered the smallest player who has ever appeared in county cricket? I should say not. It was stated at the time A. N. Hornby first represented Harrow at Lord’s against Eton that he only weighed under six stone with his hat thrown in. Parbury, who is seven teen years of age, is at Bedford County School, I believe. He can hardly be over five feet two inches in height, and I should fancy could not weigh anything like six stone. He is a promising little bowler of quite a slow pace, and also takes some getting out when he is at the wicket. He has already taken some thirty-five to thirty-seven wickets for Bedfordshire this season. F. G. Brooks, of Bedford Grammar School, who is also representing Bedfordshire in the match now in progress at the Oval against Surrey Second Eleven, has been scoring heavily for his school this season. W h e th e r one accepts the result of the match of 1805 won by Eton by an innings and two runs, as of course Etonians do, or reject that of 1857, won by Harrow, as of course Etonians again do, Harrow is at all events able to claim a fair margin of wins over Eton in the great public school match of the year. Even admitting that of 1805 and disallowing that of 1857, which, from a Harrow standpoint is obviously unjust, Eton have only won 28 to 32 by Harrow. T h e highest individual score so far in the scores of well over 70 matches is E. Bayley’s 152 for Eton in 1841; the second best, T . G. O. Cole’s 142 for Har row in 1897. The other eleven hundreds so far in the numerical order, are A. K. Watson’s 135 for Harrow in 1885, A. W. Ridley’s 117 in 1871, C . P. Foley’s 114 in 1886, W. F. Forbes’ 113 in 1876, all for Eton. A. W. T. Daniel’s 112, not out, for Harrow in 1860; C. J. Ottaway’s 108 in 1867 for Eton, E. Crawley’s 100 for Harrow in 1885, R. B. Hoare’s 108 in 1888, and J. H. Stogdon’s 124 in 1895, both for Harrow. H. C . Pilkington’s 101, and B. J. T . Bosanquet’s 120, both for Eton in 1896. By the way, good portraits of the two captains of 1901, as well as of Messrs. R. A. H. Mitchell, C. M. Wells, and M. C. Kemp appeared in the Tatler of the 10th inst. THE KANGAROOK. Dr. R. Macdonald, the Queensland cricketer, who is now playing for Leices tershire, scored 127 against Sussex at Hastings. He was at the wickets for six hours and a half, and during the whole of that time was never once induced to go out of his course, even when he was within thirteen runs of his hundred, and the last batsman was at the wicket. Of course, bis innings was extremely useful to his side, and the moral effect of it on his opponents was enormous.
