Cricket 1901

Ju ly 18 , 1901. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. 279 this time he had satisfied himself that the bowling could no loDger have any mysteries for him, but he ■went so steadily on his career that when stumps were drawn he was still thirteen runs short of his hundred, although he had been batting for four hours and a-half. Knight played by far the best innings of the day ; he was batting for two hours for his very fine innings of 99, and during bis partnership with Dr. MacDonald scored 76 runs out of 86. On the second morning the Doctor again p’ ayed himself in most leisurely, and there seemed no earthly chance that he would have time to make the required runs to com plete his hundred, for when "Whiteside, the last man, came in, he still required thirteen. Ninety-nine batsmen out of a hundred would, under the circum stances, have gone for the bowling, but Dr. MacDonald seemed to have implicit confidence in his P artner, who, in his turn, took his own time to settle own. The bowling was changed over and over again, and opportunities of making runs were simply “ chucked ” at them, but nothing could induce them to hit. Gradually, however, ever so gradually, the Doctor got nearer to his hundred, and at last, after taking fifty minutes to increase his total by nine, he made a four on the on-side and the spell was broken. From this moment the batting was much more attractive, but it was a long time before the Sussex bowlers, including Ranjitsinhji with lobs, could separate the batsmen, who eventually succeeded in adding 86 for the last wicket. Dr. MacDonald was then bowled by Relf for 127, after batting for six hours and a-quarter. As he made no fewer than twenty-one 4’s, it may be imagined that the intervals between his hits were inordinately long. Sussex, with a big task before them, lost Mr. Fry almost immediately, and accordingly Yine settled himself down to make his end secure at all events. He played a very fine, steady innings for three hours and a-quarter, and it was not a little due to his persistency that Sussex were able to make 314 for six wickets by the close of the day. Ranjitsinbji played perfect cricket while he was in, and afterwards Killick, Marlow, Relf, and Mr. Newham all did well. There was a heavy thunderstorm at Hastings on the next morning, and no more cricket could be played. L e ic e s t e r s h ir e . Cambridge after the first innings were playing an uphill game, but when the match ended they were within 37 runs of victory with four wickets in hand. This satisfactory resultwas chiefly due to the splendid batting of Mr. Day, who played a faultless innings of 123 in three hours, and a determined stand at a critical moment by Mr. Hind.
