Cricket 1901

276 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u ly 18, 1901. He commenced seven innings, going in first every time and carrying out his bat on five occasions. In Electorate matches his average ■was eleven innings, eight times not out, 798 runs, highest score 200, average 266. In the match at Brisbane on December 17th, 1898, between Yalley and Toowong, Dr. MacDonald (200 not out) and his brother, Dr. Y. MacDonald (149), added 300 runs in partnership, which is a record in Queensland cricket. In these days of huge scores almost all the batting records are held by men who are in their prime at the present time, and on Friday last one of the most historical of all records went by the board after standing for over thirty years. At Brighton, in 1871, Mr. W . G. Grace played an innings of 217 for the Gentle men against the Players at Brighton, and this remained the highest score hit in these matches until beaten last week by Abel. The bowling of the Gentlemen at the Oval this year was notoriously weak, and Abel saw his opportunity and seized it. His innings of 247 was made in his best style, and was a splendid perform ance for a cricketer of his age and height. It will not, however, compare for a moment with W. G .’ s innings of 1871. W. G. scored his runs against the bowl ing of Jimmy Shaw, Southerton, Martin McIntyre, Tom Hayward, and James Lillywhite, jun., whilst Abel’s innings was played against the attack of A. O. Jones, O. J. Bumup, R. E. More, D. L. A. Jephson, W. G. Grace, C. McGahey, P. F. Warner, H. B. Hayman, and L. G. Wright. Probably at no time in the whole history of the game has the Gentle men’s bowling been so weak as it is at present, and the fact that Hayman and Warner obtained wickets shows how little bowling talent there is among the amateurs. Owing to pressure of space but little can be written concerning this week’s cricket', but it can be noted that (i) K. S. Ranjitsinhji played a great innings of 219 against Essex on Tuesday, that (ii) the Lancashire bowling has been greatly strengthened by the inclusion in the team of Mr. E. E. Steel, that (iii) W. Gunn’s innings of 273 is the highest score of his career and a record for Notts, that (iv.) Shrewsbury and Gunn added over 200 runs together against Derbyshire, that (v.) Knight and Shrewsbury both scored 99 during the week, the former playing consecutive innings of 99 and 96, and that (vi.) Somersetshire gained a splendid victory with Yorkshire. G-BANVILLE v.
