252 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u ly 4, 1901. H A M P S H IR E v . W O R C E S T E R S H IR E . Played at Southam pton on J u ly 1 ,2 , and 3. W orcestershire w on b y 91 runs. A t Southampton Lhere had been rain, as everywhere else, and the wicket was greatly in favour of the bowlers, more particularly towards the end of the day. Worcestershire, who were playing Hampshire for the first time, would have done very b^d'y but for the splendid inniDgs of 50 by Mr. It. E Fonter, who was about the only man who could play Llewellyn, the latter haviDg a splendid analysis. When Hamp shire went in Captain Greig played pretty crick-1 for a time, but the wickets fell fast and it was again Llewellyn who came to the rescue of his side. He made his runs quickly and well. A t the end of the day Hampshire had lost nine wickets and were 36 runs behind. On Tuesday there was no play. The Hampshire innings ended abruptly yesterdav. Then Bowley played a very fine innings f r Worcestershire, and as several other men did well, the visitors were able to declare. Captain Greig again did well, but afterwards Mr. Sprott alone could play the bowling. WORCESTERSHIRE. First innings. Second innings. T H E L A N C A S H IR E M A T C H . FOURTEENTH OF TH E TOUR. P layed at O ld Trafford on J u ly 1, 2, and 3. L ancashire won b y eigh t w ickets. Several of the regular members of the Lancashire team, includiog Mr. MacLaren, were absent when this match began on Monday. The eleven included Mr. E. E. Steel, who played for the county about thirteen years a g o ; he is a brother of Mr. A. G. Steel. Although only a few minutes were avai able for play owing to the wet weather, three separate attempts were made to go on with the game, in each case being followed by a hurried rush for shelter, and the South Africans made 13 for the loss of two wickets. On Tuesday Mr. Tancred and Mr. Hathorn, who were not out on the previous day, played good cricket, but the bowlers were masters of the situation. But Mr. Hal iwell and Mr. Sinclair did well. When Lancashire went in they found the bowling of Mr. Sinclair and Mr. Rowe too good for them and they ended with a balance against them of 30. Most of the South Africans made useful scores in the second innings, and it looked as if they had a good chance of saving the match when Lancashire went in to make 172 runs. But Mr. Steel, Mr. Garnett and Hibbert made so light of the task that the home team gained a surprisingly easy victory. G L O U C E S T E R S H IR E . Played at B ristol on J u ly 1, 2, and 3. Som ersetshire won b y 127 runs. Thanks to some remarkably good cricket by Mr. L. C. H. Palairet, who scored fil in about an hour and a half, a lively and exceedingly useful innings by Mr. Vernon Hill, and sound defence by Mr. Bernard and Gill. Somersetshire made a decidedly good score for a wicket what had been affected by heavy rain. Gloucestershire fared badly in a bad light, and when stumps were drawn were 1(8 runs behind with only three wickets in hand. They only increased their total by 29 on Tuesday morning, so that Somerset began thcir second innings with the satijfactory lead of 79 runs. For the second time in the match Mr. Palairet played superb cricket; he was at the wickets for two hours and a quarter, and it was chiefly through him that his county was in such an excellent position at the end of the innings. Wrathall and Mr. Brown played up nobly for Gloucestershire, bnt Br und was in such fine form that nothing could be done with him. S om erset . First innings. L. C. H.
