Cricket 1901

250 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u ly 4, 1901 piece of turf on the sole of one of his boots had placed it, as is the general custom of bowlers, behind the wicket from which he was bowling. It was this very small obstacle which caused the ball to rebound on to the stumps. The inci dent produced a considerable difference of opinion among the Surrey players as to the result if the wicket had been dis turbed. In this case would the batsman have been out or not ? For myself I can only see one answer, not out. T he list of scorers of a thousand runs this season is now as follows :— Hayward, Abel, Tyldesley, Mr. Jessop, Mr. C. J. B. Wood, Mr. C. B. Fry, Mr. McGahey, Mr. R. E. Foster, Mr. F. Mitchell, and Carpenter, the last four having reached the thousand in the matches at the end of last week. The heavy rain on Sunday did not tend to increase the list, but W. G. Quaife stands at 949, Mr. A. 0 . Jones at 910, Mr. Perrin at 8§3. R hodes still continues to add steadily to his total of wickets, and has now arrived at 127. Trott just succeeded in touching the hundred in the match between M.C.C. and Cambridge Univer sity, while Hirst is creeping up with 91, Richardson with 86, and Mr. Bradley with 81.
