P layed at D arlin gton on June 27, 28, and 29. South A frican s w on b y 446 runs. Nothing occurred during the early stages of this match to lead one to anticipate that the South Africans would gain an overwhelming victory. They batted well in their first innings, which however did not produce a big total, but on the other hand when the Durham men had ended their innings the visitors only had a lead of 37, which was not very much to go upon on a good wicket. But in their second innings the South Africans played splendid cricket, and the Durham bowlers proved unable to cope with them. When stumps were drawn on Friday evening it was evident that Durham were quite out of the running for the visitors were then 416, Mr. Halliwell and Mr. Graham being not out. On Saturday this pair added 86, and immediately after the dismissal of Mr. Halli well, who had played splendid cricket, and had only just missed his hundred, the innings was closed. It was by no means a “ one man ” innings, for Mr. A. Bisset scored his first hundred of the tour, and Mr. Hathorn for the second time in the match played a splendid innings. Durham went in at half-past twelve to make 539—a task which was practically impossible, although after their display in their first innings, it was thought that they would at least make a fair bid for a draw. But against the bowling of Mr. Sinclair and Mr. J'owe they came to grief, the only good innings being 36 by Mr. T. Prince of Monkswearmouth, who was playing in his first important match. At one time there were eight wickets down for 29, but Turnbull and Prince then made a good stand. The match proved to be a great success, and if it had lasted well into Saturday there would have been a bi$ crowd, as excursion trains were to be run. Mr. Sinclair and Rowe both bowled admirably. Up to the beginning of this match Kent had not been in luck’s way. They had lost to Middlesex, Sussex and Yorkshire in recent matches, and on the first n’ght they seemed in a fair way of being beaten again. For against a score of 291 they had lost three of their best men for 46 runs. The most noticeable point about the day’s cricket was the splendid batting of Mr. R. E. Foster, who scored 95 by faultless cricket, his driving being delightful to watch. On the second day Kent did badly, and at close of play bad lost a wicket in their second innings and required 362 runs to win. M r. Foster and Wheldon again played splendid cricket for W or cestershire. Kent, on the third day, never looked like making the runs, although they played a fine up-hill game. W orcestersh ire .
