Special efforts on the part o f the tow n authorities had been m ade to render the week attractive, and the townspeople took considerable interest in the first m atch, Som ersetshire never having previously played against W orcestershire. Owing to heavy rain it was not possible to begin the m atch until one o ’clock, when the visitors went to the wickets. M r. R . E. Foster and Bow ley put up 20 before lonch, but the form er was m issed before he had m ade a run. A fter lunch Cranfield and G ill soon began to get wickets, but the total was by no means bad for the pitch. Somersetshire comm enced so badly that it began to look as if the w hole team w ould be out for about 60. The first four wickets fell for 30 runs, and the fifth w icket at 44, but M r. W oods, M r. H ill, Gill, and M r. H ym an m ade thi> gs look better by the time that stum ps were drawn, the score then being 95 for seven wickets. The last three w ickets only added at the rate o f a run apiece to the score, so that W orcstershire began their second innings with a lead o f 59, no inconsiderable advantage on a difficult wicket. They did fairly well at first in their second innings, M r. Foster again playing very good cricket, and at lunch time 1 hey had scored 86 for the loss of five w ickets— 145 runs on. A fterw ards Cranfield was nearly irresistible, and in the end Somersetshire had to m ake 170 to w in. Somersetshire seemed to have no earthly chance of winning when M r. Hym an joined Mr. H ill, but these tw o batsm en brought the score from 78 for six wickets, to 130. M r. H ill was the first to t?o, haviDg played a splendid gam e, hitting trem endously hara w hen a chance offered itself, and also sh oein g sound defence. W ith his departure W orcestershire steadily gained the upper hand. W o rc e s te rs h ir e . First innings. Second innings. R . E .
