DERBYSHIRE v. WARWICKSHIRE. Played at Derby on June 20, 21 and 22. Abandoned. It is so exceedingly seldom that the Derbyshire m en have been favoured by luck o f late years that they can hardly have know n w hat to m ake o f things when rain cam e to their assistance on Saturday, when it seem ed that nothing short o f a m iracle could save them from defeat. On Thursday, W arw ickshiie scored 213 fo r the loss o f three w ickets in the course o f the three hours during which it was possible to play. For nearly all this tim e the bowlers were handicapped by a w et ball, a drizzling rain causing frequent adjournm ents. M aking the m ost of their advantage, D evey and M r. Byrne put up runs pretty quickly, and afterw ards W . G. Q uaife m ade 47, and was not out when stum ps were drawn at a quarter past six ow ing to the bad light. On Friday, things w ent very badly with Derbyshire, and when stum ps were drawn they required 171 runs to save the inning’s defeat with nine w ickets in hand. W . G. Q uaife continued his victorious career, and when the innings v a s declared at lunch he was still not out w ith 117 to his credit, his fourth hundred in five successive innings ; he was bat ting for three hours and at tim es played m ost attract ive cricket. Derbyshire began w ell enough w ith M r. W right and Bagshaw, but after they Mere parted there was a breakdow n which was. however, prevented from becom ing very bad by plucky play by the tail. W hen play ended D erbyshire had scored 29 for one w icket. On Saturday they played a fine uphill gam e, but despite their efforts they m ust have been easily beaten if rain had not com e to their assistance. Bagshaw and Needham played very fine cricket indeed. W a b w ic k sh ir b . D evey. b H ulm e........... 67 H . W . Lucas and M r. Turner, Essex seem ed on Thursday to h ive done badly when they lost the toss, for heavy rain had fallen, and on a wicket w hich did not seem likely to im prove, Lancashire scored P3 for three w ickets before lunch, and thus pained an excellent btart. H olland was not out 22 and H allow s not ou t 24. A s m ore rain then fell, causing a postponem ent o f the gam e until Friday, it looked highly probable that thes* runs w ould be o f the greatest use. On Friday it was im possible to resume play until after twelve o’clock, and then on a soft wicket Hallow s and H olland (the old Leicestershire professional) m ade the Essex bow ling look exceed ingly ch ea p; they put on 145 for the fourth w icket in tw o hours and a quarter, and as they came together with the total at 49 for three wickets, the scoring board just before they were parted showed 194 for three wickets. But Lancashire had now nearly got to the end o f their tether, and the innings came to an abrupt conclusion. B y this tim e the sun had com e out and m ade the w icket exceedingly difficult fo r Essex, w ho could m ake no headway against W ebb and H allows, and ended their innings 187 runs behind— it was probably lucky for them that they saved the follow on. A t the end o f the day, Lancashire (w ho were w ithout M r. M acLaren) had scored 6 w ithout loss, and thus, w ith all their wickets in hand, were leading by 143 runs. On Saturday, the rain, w hich seem ed to have settled the chances o f Essex, cam e to their rescue, and they were able to make an honourable draw. W ard and Tyldealey played very fine cricket for Lancashire, w ho were able to declare at 165 for 6 wickets, leaving Essex to m ake 302 after lunch if they could. But things w ent badly with them , and although M r. Garrett played a fine gam e, and M r. Perrin kept up his wicket and defied all the Lancashire bowlers, the odds were that the m atch w ould end in a very substantial victory for Lancashire. B ut the rain came dow n heavily at half-past four, and there was no m ore chance of playing. L a n c a sh ir e . First innings. H . G.
