J u n e 2 0 , 1 9 0 1 . CRICKET r A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. such a vast quantity of runs that he would not wish for any added to his name which he really did not obtain.” Perhaps some reader of Cricket can state definitely whether “ W . G.’s ” score was really 400 or not. The run-getting powers of Nottinghamshire and Surrey teams fluctuate in an extraordinary manner. Each side either does exceedingly well or collapses badly. After being beaten in somewhat ignominious fashion at Trent Bridge by Sussex, Notts retrieved a bad start against Kent at Catford in marvellous fashion and then j oumeyed to Brighton where they ran up a score of 642 for seven wickets, whilst Surrey, after having the best of a drawn E tme with Yorkshire, were well beaten by ancashire, and then made 473 against Worcestershire at the Oval. Notts generally score very largely against Sussex, and their recent total of 642 is the sixth of over five hundred they have made against the southern county. Everything in the recent match was dwarfed by Mr. Jones’ innings of 249, which ranks with Capt. Greig’s score against Lan cashire as the largest of the season. Although the Brighton ground favours a big hitter, Mr. Jones’ 249 must be considered one of the best innings he has everplayed. Shrewsbury is evidently regaining some of his old form, as he has followed up his score of 63 at Catford with one of 96 at Brighton. Abel and Mr. Crawford, too, are now apparently in their beet batting form. The former makes large scores with such regularity that a century from his bat causes but little comment. Mr. Crawford, after starting the season in some what disastrous fashion, has made full atone ment for his previous shortcomings by exceeding the hundred on three occasions in four consecutive matches. His innings of 159 the day before yesterday—his forty-seventh century in all matches—is the largest he has as yet played in first-clasB cricket. Of the many remarkable victories achieved by the Yorkshire team since 1X99 not the least remarkable was that gained by the side over Essex at Leeds on Tuesday. Probably no team has ever been able to change the whole aspect of a game in so short a time as the present Yorkshire eleven. When stumps were drawn on Monday evening Essex appeared to hold a slight advantage, yet early in the following afternoon the match was over and Yorkshire had won by an innings and sixty runs. The partnership of F. Perrin (a brother of the Essex cricketer) and A. E. Crang for the first wicket of Crouch End against Lauderdale, at Crouch End, on the 6th inst., realised 363 runs. F. Perrin made 247 not out and A. E. Crang 123, as stated “ Gossip ” last week. LO N D O N SCO TTISH v. E A L IN G .—H ayed at Brondesbury on June 16. EALING. A.J?. Nepean, c sub, b P.
