ESSEX v. DERBYSHIRE. Played at Leyton on June 10, 11, and 12. Drawn. At one tim e Essex seemed about to make a very big score, for after M r. Owen had opened the innings well with Carpenter, he and M r. Perrin kept together until lunch tim e w hen the score was 173. Both m en played very attractive cricket, and had a great com mand over the bow ling. B ut imm ediately after lunch there was a rem arkable collapse, and in three quarters of an hour there were six wickets dow n for 218, the last five having only produced 45 runs since lunch. B ut M r. Toesetti afterw ards played a most useful innings, and Reeves hit with great power, 8coring 87 runs in an h o u r; he and Kunsell put on 90 in thirty-five minutes. Thus thanks to the tail the total was satisfactory enough. Derbyshire had lost Bagshaw w hen stum ps were drawn w ith the total at «>3. On Tuebday, Locker, w ho was m aking his debut, and M r. W right, played very fine cricket, and at lunch the score was 201 for five wickets, so that Derbyshire were in a fairly satisfactory position. But just as in the Essex inniD gs there was a startling collape after lunch, R eevts in 11 balls taking five tickets for n o runs. Nevertheless, there was no Question o f Derbyshire having ,to follow on, as they had got within 144 o f the Essex total. Essex began their second innings extrem ely well, both M r. Owen and Carpenter being in great form . M r. Owen reached his hundred shortly before stum ps were drawn, but was unable to resume his innings yester day ow ing to an injured le g ; be and Mr. Perrin both played a great game. Rain interrupted play and Derbyshire succeeded in their object of m aking a draw. E sse x . First innings. Second innings. 84 retired hurt 106 16 H. G.
